From Library Journal

They had been married for 20 years when Polly Ferrison realizes that she no longer loves her husband, an astounding change of heart for someone who had idolized him since their London student days. It is a revelation that makes the prospect of the annual picnic with four university friends less than appealing. Surely glamorous Candida, wife of a wealthy tycoon; contented Mary, with her idyllic farm; restless Vanessa, the much-divorced solicitor; and brilliant Jane with her government career have none of the problems that make Polly's life a dull drudgery. However, a visit to Candida starts Polly on the road to self-discovery and change just as her friends tackle their own transforming challenges. The standard "reunion" plot is kept fresh and enthralling by Hucker's sympathetic characters and her skill in creating ambiance. More realistic than Hucker's A Dangerous Happiness (LJ 6/1/96), this work will appeal to baby boomers coping with their own life crises as Rosamond Pilcher's The Shell Seekers (St. Martin's, 1987) did to their parents. Highly recommended.?Cynthia Johnson, Cary Memorial Lib., Lexington, Mass.

From Kirkus Reviews

British writer Hucker's becoming a master at exploring the psyche of the independent-minded woman (A Dangerous Happiness, 1996, etc.)--and her examination here of the complex nature of female friendships produces yet another angle on the subject. Middle-aged, red-haired Polly Ferrison's friends think that she has the perfect life: two bright, attractive daughters, a challenging, satisfying job as a high-school history teacher, and a loving husband, Neville. But as it turns out, of course, appearances lie: Neville is actually a selfish, demanding, greedy, adulterous creep who's been conducting a sporadic 20-year fling with one of Polly's supposed best friends, Vanessa. Worse, he's in love with another woman (now pregnant by him), whom he wants to marry. A breakup with Polly is inevitable. When her four best friends from college--the vampy Vanessa, wealthy Candida, farmwife Mary, and career-woman Jane--hear the news, they're sympathetic (except for Vanessa, who's enraged that Neville hasn't chosen her), but they've all got troubles of their own: Candida married for money and is now in love with another man; Mary has a husband and children of her own, but Vanessa relies on her so much that it's almost as if she has another extra-needy charge. And driven Jane has finally met the man of her dreams, but she'll have to give up her career and move to Poland if she wants to stay together with him. At the story's opening, the surfaces of these women's lives haven't yet cracked, but circumstances soon plunge all four into a turmoil that teaches them, to varying degrees, that sometimes friendship is the only thing you can count on. The larger point, however, is that the modern woman has enough options, so that any choices she makes can be the right ones--if she believes in her own self-worth. A slight but ultimately satisfying read, less syrupy than much of this genre. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, November 29, 1997

This review is from: Trials of Friendship (Hardcover)
In her forties, Polly Ferrison wonders why her world seems so stale. She no longer loves her husband Neville and her once beautiful relationship with her adult daughter Rose seems like a distant dream. She fears attending the annual luncheon with her college friends since all of them are successful and happy.

However, Polly is more observant this year and soon realizes that her four friends are all going through some form of a mid-life crisis. Jane, who always loved being single, wonders if it is time to give up her free spirit lifestlye for a loving long-term relationship. Candida struggles with her passion for one man while her mode of living and her spouse hang in the balance. Mary provides motherly comfort to the very depressed Vanessa, who is coming out of a disillusioning affair and into the role of a reluctant parent. However, Polly discerns that beyond Mary's motherly instincts, she possesses little substance a state that makes her seem inconsequential. Polly, who is becoming a novelist, understands that her life is no better or worse than her friends and she must mend the fence with her beloved Rose.

TRIALS OF FRIENDSHIP is a novel that is often times humorous and just as often sad. The five women are all interesting characters and the support cast add to the feel of angst shared by the middle aged British middle class. Hazel Hucker is a spectacular author, whose British distaff BIG CHILL is well written and fun to read.
