This is a fascinating look at how one story changes through the course of time. Zipes presents many versions of "Little Red" -- and each change represents a change in the ideas of the storyteller and his or her time and the needs of the listener. Observing the story's progression through the last few centuries tells us much about what we have lost and gained, known and forgotten, desired and feared. "Little Red" becomes a microcosm for the developing individual and social human psyche, as we watch what the cautionary tale cautions us against and takes for granted. A wonderful read for anyone interested in myth, sociology, fiction writing, or cultural development/studies.

I've always loved fairytales. As a child, I loved the magic items, the impossible creatures, the wonder and even the mild horror. There was nothing better than hearing my mother read - and then reading for myself, when I was older - the words "Once Upon a Time."

When I grew up, I started seeing them through the eyes of an adult, and I loved them more, but for different reasons. The story of Little Red Riding Hood has always been one of my favorites, then and now. The tale was great fun for a child, but read any of its original forms, you see an eerie story of thinly veiled mature subject matter, meant as a coded cautionary tale.

This book is amazing. It has something for everyone. It serves as both a very rich, non-fiction history-of-the-folktale lesson, giving a very detailed history of the tale from its raw and not-quite-fit-for-children origins up to its current fluffy form. It also discusses interpretations of its symbolism.

And, most prized of all, it contains dozens of versions of this story. We get LRRH stories from all over the world and throughout time. The differences are very interesting. Sometimes the grandmother survives. Sometimes she doesn't. Sometimes the woodcutter comes to the rescue. Other times he doesn't even exist. We also get contemporary, fully-fleshed retellings - some dark and sensual, others lite and humourous - from some of the greatest masters of dark fantasy, including Walter de la Mare, Tanith Lee, Anne Sexton and Angela Carter.

So, if you are a connoisseur of fairytales, folklore history or heck, even just good anthologies of fantasy fiction, you need this unique book as part of your collection.

The End!

Bought this book for a class. If it had not been a required reading, I would have stopped reading it about 1/4 of the way through. Not enjoyable, in my opinion.
