5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR NEWBIES GETTING STARTED...
I had never done anything even close to a triathlon, so this book took me step by step from day one to race day. I followed their 12 week program that prepared me for a successfull race. Great tips, great questions answered for those who don't have a clue, AND the book advances from newbie to elite with it's training if you chose to do another race.

3.0 out of 5 stars Belongs on the coffee table...
The best *looking*, but far from best, book I've found on triathlons. Its heavy, glossy pages with full-color photos make it very appealing on the surface, but sadly it lacks any depth. It offers cursory explanations of various aspects of the sport, and sprinkles in a little bit of good advice here and there, but that's about it as far as content goes. It fails to...

5.0 out of 5 stars Insider tips are most helpful, September 24, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Triathlon Training (Paperback)
This textbook has been edited concisely and is loaded with excellent drawings and pictures which illustrate most of the points the author wants to get across. Though the book is not all encompassing, it has numerous pearls of wisdom that only a personal discussion with a world class triathelete could come close to matching (and even then it would not be quite as productive). Many times reading this textbook I got the feeling that the author was sitting next to me and giving me practical tips which I have now applied and have improved my times dramatically. It would take a lifetime to accumulate the experience that Michael Finch presents in a concise, clear format. I would most highly reccomend this book at all levels, but particularly in your first two to three years of triathalons.

I am new to triathlons but have been an avid runner for years. This book thoroughly describes how to become a triathlete. It has detailed training plans for anyone from a beginner to an experienced triathlete. I can see myself using this book for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the very beginner interested in testing themselves, May 27, 2007
This review is from: Triathlon Training (Paperback)
The book breaks down tough terms and products with recommendations on the best overall gear to use during the race. The fitness plans forced me to take a serious look at my swimming endurance. I can run and bike but the book helped me train my way into this critical portion of the race.

It offers cursory explanations of various aspects of the sport, and sprinkles in a little bit of good advice here and there, but that's about it as far as content goes. It fails to include some crucial aspects of training - such as weight training - completely!

In the end, this book is ultimately better suited for your coffee table than your bookshelf. Complete newcomers to triathlons may get a little out of it, but I think anyone seriously interested in the sport would be better off reading The Triathlete's Training Bible by Joe Friel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has It All!, February 5, 2010
This review is from: Triathlon Training (Paperback)
This book has everything you need to know about triathlon training, from sprint triathlons to the full ironman. Here are the following topics covered in the book: origins of triathlon, getting the right gear (very helpful), swim, cycle, run, tackling your training, nutrition, race day, aches and pains and the world's greatest races. The book has great/realistic pictures. It covers the right gear you need to be successful from breaking down what you need and what you can do without. It also gives training programs for all levels of triathlons and it very easy to understand. This book has it all.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Children's Big Picture Book of Triathlon, August 2, 2005
By
This review is from: Triathlon Training (Paperback)
This is too basic to be helpful. The author admits taking most of the training plans published from popular web sites where they are published. It spends sentences describing what other books spend chapters on. I recommend Triathlon 101 for beginners/intermediates and The Triathlete's Training Bible for experts/intermediates. Great pictures though (reason I gave it two stars instead of only one)?!?

4.0 out of 5 stars My first Triathlon, May 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Triathlon Training (Paperback)
I have started to run half marathons and now would like to start on triathlon, as there were many questions I choose for this book, it is really ilustrative the way of training and the way of getting in shape injury free. This book is recommended for beginers and the ones that are coming back to this tri-sport. I'm giving it a 4 stars just because I'm strugling on how to combine the weight lifting weeks with the swiming, running and bike training sessions. Once I complete my first tri I'll be very happy with this book.
