5.0 out of 5 stars A great mix of modern Tribal fusion., April 7, 2008
By
This review is from: Tribal Beats for the Urban Streets (Dig) (Audio CD)

1. Intertwine - Beats Antique. This piece is slower, with the oud underlying an overlayer of a smearing of ethereal sound. Great for very slow taxeems.
2. Shashkin - Omar Faruk Tekbilek. More of a traditional Egyptian sound than most of the pieces on here, incorporating new instruments and modern beats.
3. Pale Elegant Egyptian - Muslimgauze. Sharon Kihara dances to this on the Solos from Monte Carlo. Guitar string picking-esque sounds lead on this lush piece.
4. Najo Ratte - Corvus Corax. While Fili Neihardi is hard to beat, this song is full of the standard Corvus Corax smallpipes/bagpipes.
5. Everybody - Bassnectar. Very similar to early, early industrial with a bit of a dance edge to it.
6. Right In the Eyeball - Pentaphobe. Very typical Pentaphobe, with asymmetical rhythms, stops and starts, but more melodic than what was found on A Tribal Metamorphosis.
7. Discovered - Beats Antique. Reminiscent of the old style carnival, with a blend of a sultry jazz style horn. If you have seen YouTube clips of Le Serpent Rouge and the old burlesque meets carnival, this is it.
8. Engrish Bwudd - Man Man A giddy mix of hurdy gurdy and nonsensical lyrics, it has a bouncy 4/4 rhythm.
9. Kleftiyiannis - The Toids String heavy and Romani based in its sound, the Toids bring a typical Balkan/folklorice dance style edge to their music.
10. Sun Dance - Ruben van Rompaey. Tabla driven, but a bit too subtle for a drum solo, but would be great spliced as a transition into another piece.
11. Nineveh - Maduro. Slow layering over a faster beat leaves a variety of options and rhythsm to dance to.
12. Ismaaouni - The Upper Egypt Ensemble. Love the mizmar on this, and also another more traditional piece made modern. Their albums are wonderful.
13. Kitten Pig - Pentaphobe. Similar to the bouncy 4/4, but a broken music box meets hurdy gurdy/grinder sound. Used on Le Serpent Rouge, I believe.

This is a great sampler if you are not sure you are into tribal fusion music, for it's a wide range of what is out there and a great representation of the artists. The contributing artist's pieces are representative of their work, but not all encompassing--for instance, if you hear one song from an artist you like, you may buy the album to find that this ONE song was good, but the rest are not your style. Here, the songs are similar to their style, and while there will be variations in rhythm, instruments, etc., if you like what they contributed here, chances are you will like their CD's as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, Lots of variety, June 22, 2008

This review is from: Tribal Beats for the Urban Streets (Dig) (Audio CD)
As far as tribal music goes, this CD is great because there is a variety of styles of music, some more classical than others, but all with great percussion. This is a great CD with which to practice dance moves and zilling.
