5.0 out of 5 stars Tribal Fusion breaking new ground
Beats Antique is a wonderful collection for Tribal Fusion, even in it's divergence from the Solace crowd, and Pentaphobe dark electronica influences. (Which I still love BTW) This album breaks new ground and delves into early jazz, blues, and San Francisco Chinatown (1800's)style, with middle eastern drum beats to overlay. I really wanted to like this CD based on other reviews and it's description. I like bellydance fusion, but I want the songs I dance to, to be 1st recogonizable as oriental music and second as fusion. Too many songs on this CD impress me as middle eastern inspired Jazz.

It's a hypnotic, opium filled fantasy full of deep smoky images from the past, seeping under the wooden floorboards of a jazz club down a back alley and with the right password, you gain access to it's delicious rhythms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Borders on Trip-Hop, June 16, 2008
This review is from: Tribal Derivations (Dig) (Audio CD)
I'm a little surprised to see all the reviews of people who say they wanted to bellydance to this? I suppose so. I think that's kind of missing the point of the CD.

You could also say it's middle eastern inspired jazz, but I think that's missing a component of the music.

Personally, I'd categorize the music as middle eastern inspired trip-hop. A fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and psychedelia, all rolled up into a framework of middle eastern influence.

The music doesn't strike me as regular enough to dance too. Too many odd tempo changes and pauses. This is music you groove to, no matter what kind of grooving you do. You could chill to it in a dark room. You can groove to it while entertaining friends. You can groove to schoolwork. It's very versatile music. But more than anything, it's sheer pleasure. This is beautiful music. Beautiful, wonderful, interesting, compelling music.

This CD is FANTASTIC! Definately my favorite CD as a tribal dancer. I HIGHLY reccomend this, the music is just phenomenal. You'll especially appreciate this if you're familiar with The Indigo.

I probably should have gotten something a little more traditional while I'm still learning. This music is fun and WONDERFUL, but has a lot of opportunities for a little bit of theatrical movement, and as a beginner, I can barely get the basics down right now. BUT a wonderful add to any collection, I'm still listening to it even if I don't know what I'm doing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, August 4, 2007

This is a great CD. I just used the music to dance at a show. A real crowd pleaser, and fun to dance to. I agree it brings bellydance into the 21st century, yet it also maintains "real" bellydance rhythms.
I would love to see another of these CD's soon please!

The music on this cd is perfect for tribal bellydancing (especially solo). I love the blend of down-tempo hip hop beats and middle eastern instruments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for dancing & listening, February 18, 2008

This CD is amazing. Very talented musicians combine a kind of urban alternative jazzy sound with belly dance rhythms. This is one of the few dance CDs that I own (and I own many) that I'll put on just to listen to. There are so many unique textures to play with that it's great inspiration for choreography. I recommend listening to a couple samples to see if it's right for you, too.

I love this cd. A good combination of old and new. The little previews "listen to samples" don't do it justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Tribal Music CD This Year, November 11, 2007
This review is from: Tribal Derivations (Dig) (Audio CD)
Normally when I buy a CD there's one or two songs that I really like and the rest I could live without. This CD doesn't have a track on it I don't like. You can tell a belly dancer had something to do with producing it. I hope they make 10 more just as good as this one.
Each track is different with modern influences but there is a hint of Middle Eastern music if not full blown ME drum rhythms and saz playing going on. The tracks are all good lengths with nice build up in the music. I can't say enough good things about this CD. I could do a whole show using every track. I will say if you are looking for traditional belly dance music you may be disappointed. Definitely made with Tribal Fusion in mind.
