5.0 out of 5 stars Drum! magazine review March 2004, April 25, 2004

Music: "Hey, this doesn't sound like Brazilian music." Well, it does but it isn't samba or bossa nova. Tribalista scooped a Latin Grammy and sold by the millions in Brazil and Europe. This documentary dvd follows the creation of a megahit by drum god Carlinhos Brown, diva Marisa Monte and poet-rocker Arnoldo Antunes. There's a tremendous amount to be learned from this dvd which covers rehearsals and all tracks from the cd.

Drumming: Quadruple threat -- percussionista, singer, songwriter and magnetic dancer/performer Brown puts himself at the service of the songs with tasty tender restraint. (For monster drum chops check his latest cd, Carlito Marron, a hip fusion of Brazilian, African and Cuban influences all filtered through the brain of Carlinhos!) Along with his arsenal of percussion toys his main axe is a set of brushes played on everything from ago-go bell, tin bucket, bongos, shakers to snare.

Verdict: Weirdly beautiful songs that you'll listen to again and again!
---------------------------------
On a personal note, as a percussionist, this is the most inspiring documentation of musical creativity I have ever seen. I guess the reviewer who thought the video was too dark and missed seeing the musicians made up and lit for video would rather watch constructed music videos. Obviously the filmmaker was staying out of the way of the music being made. Totally, totally brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars America needs music like this !, July 5, 2004

This is one of the best music DVD's that I have ever seen.
The DVD takes you inside the recording studio. You get to see Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown, and Arnaldo Antunes as they create their incredible sonic picture. You will be amazed to see all the different instruments that are used to create this album. There are instruments that you have never seen before. The 3 musicians even invent their own instuments.
It's beautiful music and a learning tool at the same time!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best-produced music videos ever, December 27, 2003
This review is from: Tribalistas (DVD)
Wow... what a great video! An amazing portrait of these three super-hip, modern Brazilians working together on a truly beautiful project. This gorgeously shot, skillfully edited film documents the four year-long process that led to the completion of the densely-layered, gently melodic, supremely life-affirming "Tribalistas" album, featuring in-studio performances of the taping of all the songs, each prefaced by a brief glimpse of the collaborative process that went into its conception and perfection. The friendly creative interplay and cheerfulness of the musicians comes through brilliantly -- I already was a fan all three artists before seeing this video, but now I feel immense affection for them, and a much greater appreciation for them and their muse. The delicate attention to detail and to the texture of their performances is impressive, as is the playful, positive message of their music. Optional English subtitles are a boon for all us dumb Yankees, and additional behind-the-scenes features amplify the insights into their creative bond. The album itself is great, but the DVD is indispensible for fans who want to get delve deeper into the mystique of these fab neo-tropicalistas. HIGHLY recommended!

If you like brazilian music, you won't be dissappointed ! This dvd is amazing, showing the creation process of the cd/dvd ! It is entirely shot in studio during the recording, so you are nearly part of the show ! Marisa and Arnaldo voices are so different that match perfectly creating enchanting songs ! Don't miss it !

5.0 out of 5 stars tribaslistas, October 30, 2008
This review is from: Tribalistas (DVD)

Carlinhos Brown, being the percussion's god.
Arnaldo Antunes the great mind and voice and to complete this perfect trio Marisa Monte with one of the most beautiful voices in the Brazilian Music Industry.

They experimented different styles of sounds, rhythms and lyrics and the result is great.

They are the best in Brazil and together they are simply amazing.

I loved it.
