1.0 out of 5 stars Densmore's Dunce
Its a shame that one of the creative minds in rock-n-roll, John Densmore who sculpted the perfect rhythms to the shamanic psychedelia of The Doors gave us this rather insipid and lite (jazz?) offering. The presence of the flute not only leads to a tropical (as opposed to a tribal) feel, but the compositions themselves lack soul. Further, the delivery of the tunes are...

I first saw Tribaljazz at the LA County Museum and they performed at a free outdoor concert. I had no idea who they were for the first few minutes of the show but I was very impressed by the energy of the group and the expert musicianship. As the performance went on and I learned that John Densmore, the drummer was one of the fouder of The Doors, and they introduced the band that hailed from all parts of the world i was simply blown away. I have been looking forward to to the album release and now that I have it I have not been disappointed. It is an incredible, surprisingly eclectic album that lovers of all types of music will enjoy. My favorite trax are Skytrails and Blues for Bali. I also like the Violet Love with Michael Franti from Spearhead. This is really really good. I did not grow up as a Doors fan but i am now curious about them as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tribaljazz is a unique hit!!! A breath of fresh air!, October 31, 2006

Tribaljazz is an awesome record that really gets down to the soul of what jazz is. It is something that I can listen to in the car, on the beach, at the house, literally anywhere! Its awesome! Legendary musician John Densmore headed up this project, and though I don't know much about The Doors, I find that this musician is truly legendary on the Jazz scene as well. There is even a version of "Riders On The Storm" on Tribaljazz! [..]. You will not be disappointed if you buy this record. Do yourself a favor and pick it up now!

5.0 out of 5 stars John Densmore- A Cool Twist from the Doors Drummer, October 31, 2006
This review is from: Tribaljazz (Audio CD)
Hey All:

I encourage all of you to check out the new Tribaljazz cd. Its from John Densmore, the legendary drummer of The Doors and is a cool collection of jazz as only John can deliver. It reminds me alot of Spro Gyra and The Yellowjackets from the late 80's. Standout songs to me include: Skytrails, Blues for Bali, and Riders on the Storm. A must have for any DOORS fan!!!! Try it out and I promise you will not be disappointed.

Further, the delivery of the tunes are weak, suited more to a sunday brunch crowd than a smoke filled improv session. One of the reviewers hit it on the spot while comapring this to the smooth, diluted syrupy jazz of Spyorgyra. Case in point - Violet Love with its saccharine driven sax leads. Seriously, we expected a LOT more from Densmore....maybe next time.

On the other hand check out Manzarek's Love Her Madly. A great documentation of taking the music to the next level, stretching it out, brewing the vamps it in the electronic(a) pot, all the while maintaining the vibe he created alongside the late Jim Morrison. Krieger, IMHO achieved the same on Cinematix

4.0 out of 5 stars NICE SMOOTH, CREATIVE AND RELAXING JAZZ/FUNK., January 31, 2011
This review is from: Tribaljazz (Audio CD)
I thought that this was a very pleasant and relaxing recording to listen to. John Densmore, The Doors drummer has done a superb job showcasing a more subtle and reserved side of his percussion skills. All songs with the exception of Riders On The Storm which was composed by The Doors was written by Art Ellis, the flute player. He also does a splendid job on the soprano sax. The musicianship here is very good and they do a great job complimenting one another. Not a recording that will blow your socks off or raise the roof but very enjoyable and easy to listen to. If you like smooth jazz played by exceptional musicians I strongly recommend disc this for you. I would like to see this ensemble live. I give it a solid 4 stars. See my other reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Densmore's TribalJazz - Excellent, June 4, 2010

This review is from: Tribaljazz (Audio CD)
Hello,

I am a lifetime fan of The Doors, and this is why I learned about TribalJazz. Doors drummer John Densmore has always loved jazz, and indeed one of the reasons so many of us love The Doors is their jazz influences. John is definitely one of the greatest drummers in human history. His percussion contributes so much to the Shamanistic Magic of the Doors, and he has only become better with the years!

TribalJazz is "world music". A joyful, intelligent ride into new realms. I particularly love the sequence "The Last Time I Heard Coltrane", "Piano Interlude", "Lyria". I simply cannot get enough of "Lyria".

Whether or not you love The Doors, please check out TribalJazz. If you like jazz, or if you like to open up your mind to innovative and beautiful music, you will love this album.

TribalJazz has taken its place alongside my Doors collection. I love and honor this work of art!

Very highly recommended...

1.0 out of 5 stars Sucks, August 14, 2009

This is garbage. The remaining Doors need to get back together with a good singer and make a new album, this is aweful.
