4.0 out of 5 stars For fun and light reading
I do not watch reality TV, but someone recommended this as a fun-to-read book, for those who do and do not watch these shows. Provides comic relief at a reasonable pace; a great place to laugh at ourselves and, for some, to relive some of their favorite episodes. This is a great fast and funny view of life's lessons.

1.0 out of 5 stars Appalling
If you are interested in a collection of quotes from the stupidest and least interesting reality shows, this is the book for you. Not what I was looking for.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the Reality TV Fan, October 24, 2004

This review is from: The Tribe Has Spoken: Life Lessons from Reality TV (Paperback)
The Tribe Has Spoken is easy to read with funny "tidbits" about life's lessons learned from Reality TV shows. This is a book for anyone who wants to chuckle or laugh out loud. Volk takes direct quotes from reality TV shows and writes his own humorous analysis. He's got a great sense of humor that I enjoy. The book's print is in shades of green, which I don't like-- but this is a minor distraction. If you enjoy watching Reality TV or know someone who does, give this book a try.

I count just a few reality TV shows as guilty pleasures. Volk has ensured that I never have to watch the rest. This book is out-and-out pee-in-your-pants funny!! Favorite quote is by none other than Ozzy Osbourne on Page 94. Great gift book for damn near anyone who watches TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for bathroom reading, November 16, 2004

Remember the Jeff Goldblum character in "The Big Chill" who played a writer for People magazine? He admitted that no story took longer to read than the average trip to the bathroom.

Well, "The Tribe Has Spoken" is the perfect book for bathroom reading. It's a hilarious look at the wit and wisdom of deep thinkers like Ozzy Osbourne and Anna Nicole Smith.

You're unlikely to be wiser after reading "The Tribe Has Spoken," but you will leave the bathroom with a smile on your face.

4.0 out of 5 stars Liven up those dull dinner parties, November 3, 2004
This review is from: The Tribe Has Spoken: Life Lessons from Reality TV (Paperback)
This book will certainly add spice to an otherwise bland meal. Laugh-out-loud lines from the likes of Anna Nicole Smith and Sharon Osborne will have you holding your side, scratching your head and saying, "huh?" or snorting with mirth. Yes, mirth.

As one who is not a fan of reality television, Volk saved me the effort of watching these shows. This book also allowed me to find just the right quote to share as I stand around the watercooler at the office.

Makes a great gift for "Survivor" and "Real World" addicts in your life.

This book is an easy laugh-just try reading it out loud with friends and keep a straight face! Volk pokes fun at the characters and then gives us 'life-lessons' to learn on every page. Guaranteed funny. I'll put this book on my gifts-to-give this holiday season.

Nice collection of quotes from a few dozen reality shows, grouped into topical mini-chapters. They really are mini. There's only content on about two thirds of the pages, with almost 1 of every six blank before a full-page "chapter" heading, leaving 4 for quotes and, uh, witty? repertoire.

That's the problem. It's just not that funny. The quotes themselves are okay. Not the best. And not the most popular or well-known or even telling. A bunch to which Volk can reply with short quips that may or may not been intended to be funny - I couldn't tell.

On the other hand, it's quick mindless read that can be read in 30 second stops over a few days without doing great harm or causing great waste. And there do appear be people who found it humorous. I'm just not one of them. I don't think you will be either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gift from God, December 16, 2004

Lit with the same ineluctable fire as the best of Shakespeare, Chekov, David Berkowitz, and Ada Louise Huxtable. What does ineluctable mean?
