Book Description

October 1, 1999 Biblical Seminar (Book 66)
A twentieth-anniversary reprint of the landmark book that launched the current explosion of social-scientific studies in the biblical field. It sets forth a cultural-material methodology for reconstructing the origins of ancient Israel and offers the hypothesis that Israel emerged as an indigenous social revolutionary peasant movement. In a new preface, written for this edition, Gottwald takes account of the 'sea change' in biblical studies since 1979 as he reviews the impact of his work on church and academy, assesses its merits and limitations, indicates his present thinking on the subject, and points toward future directions in the social-critical study of ancient Israel and the Hebrew Bible.>

5.0 out of 5 stars Very intense read..., February 22, 2012
This review is from: Tribes of Yahweh: A Sociology of the Religion of Liberated Israel, 1250-1050 BCE (Biblical Seminar) (Paperback)
Tribes of Yahweh is a very long, dense and intense read. The diction the author
employs in this text will have most people, even highly educated persons, pulling
a thesaurus just to keep up. With that being said, I would suggest this book to
anyone who wants a thorough understanding of early biblical textual history as
well as what the author calls, "biblical sociology". This is book is a must have
for students of textual criticism as well as students of religion in general.
It is definitely worth the effort.
