Book Description

"Sick and sardonic and just plain brilliant." -Duane Swierczynski, author of Fun & Games and Expiration Date

"A cunning, cinematic redmeat feast for weird film lovers and horror freaks, Adam Cesare's Tribesmen is a first-rate literary midnight movie, and a blistering debut. BRING YOUR FRIENDS!" - John Skipp, from his introduction.

In the early 80's - at the height of the ultra-violent "Italian cannibal" grindhouse film craze - a small international cast and crew descend on an isolated Caribbean island, hoping to crassly exploit the native talent.

But the angry, undead spirits of the island have a different, more original script in mind. And as horror after staggering horror unfolds, the camera keeps rolling. To the blood-spattered end...

WELCOME TO RAVENOUS SHADOWS: a new line of startling, provocative genre fiction, dedicated to the proposition that short, powerful novels and novellas can pack as much punch, personality, and plot as books three times their size. Check out more Ravenous Shadows:

MYSTERY:
THE HOUSE OF QUIET MADNESS - Mikita Brottman

But there is something unsettling in Windfall's cryptic therapy and isolating rules. And slowly, suspicion turns to dread, as Ruth begins to discover the terrible fate that she and the rest are actually being prepared for...

Claire is a first-rate paramedic, with a heroic devotion to saving lives. She is also a survivor of unspeakable abuse, who has rebuilt herself entirely, as far from home as she could get. But when her aged father is hospitalized, after a crippling fall, Claire is dragged back into a brutal nightmare of sexual depravity, and deepest betrayal. Where the only question left is, "How can I possibly survive?" And the only answer is, "DIE, YOU BASTARD! DIE!"

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Tribesmen is a gory and clever homage to those Italian cannibal flicks that we all love so dearly, but without the real-life animal cruelty! Highly recommended." -Jeff Strand, author of Pressure and Wolf Hunt.

"The best new writer I've read in years. Wonderfully lean prose and edge-of-your-seat thrills. Drop everything else and start reading Tribesmen." -Nate Kenyon, author of Sparrow Rock and Starcraft Ghost: Spectres

"Sometimes everything goes wrong, in the best possible way. Think Snuff and Cannibal Holocaust meeting at a midnight movie. And then give one of them a camera, the other a knife." - Stephen Graham Jones, author of It Came from Del Rio and Demon Theory

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut February 3, 2012
By Jbel99
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Tribesmen is a potent, thoroughly enjoyable thriller for both horror and non-horror fans alike. Stripped down of any pretense or authorial indulgence, the novella quickly immerses you in a world where all characters are driven by a mix of fear, fame, and survival. The action is quick, gritty, and totally satisfying for hardcore horror fans.

At the same time, Tribesmen is also a glimpse into our cinematic past, a time where horror directors sought fame by pushing the boundaries of the norm and looking into humanity's animalistic side. And yet, so many of the basic themes about the movie industry ring true today: the crazed director battling to outdo his predecessors, the naive young actress looking for a break, the nerdy genre fan casting a critical eye. The book is one part cinematic history and one part poignant critique of the continuing rat race that is the film industry.

In the end, Tribesmen is a wonderfully entertaining novella that is both stripped down and hard-hitting and full of depth. I highly recommend it. One of my favorite books of early 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars Movie madness! February 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
If Tribesmen were a movie it would literally keep you on the edge of your seat. It's quick. It's lean. This is cinematic horror writing at its best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, fast, gory, and satisfying! February 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Tribesmen is a fast-paced, gory homage to the Italian cannibal exploitation "documentaries" from the early '80s. The author captures the mood and tone of these movies with his tongue firmly in cheek and the result is funny, suspenseful, bloody, and simply a lot of fun. Cesare creates three dimensional characters in a relatively short amount of time (more so than the characters in the movies that inspired the novel) and the writing is tight, witty, and well-edited. What a great start to the Ravenous Shadows line!
