This review is from: Tributaries: Reflections on Tommy Flanagan (Audio CD)
I was turned on to this record during Jane Sanchez' program on KCSM 91.1. If you like Tommy Flanagan, there's a good chance you will enjoy this recording. The liner notes (by Dick Katz, pianist) do this record far more justice than I can. I will say that on "Things Aint What They Used To Be" (Mercer-Ellington), Hanna comes up with round after round of very interesting improvisations on the basic blues theme. Listening to his version of Flanagan's Sea Changes (slowed down, and crisply stated), I came to a renwed appreciation for the playfulness and beauty of the melody. In addition to the playing, the recording/production is a treat for the ears. If you want to come to appreciate Hanna's playing, this is a great place to begin.
