2.0 out of 5 stars Abba Dabba Don't, May 23, 2005
This review is from: Tribute to Abba (Audio CD)
I think that tribute albums are really great when they are done properly. This album, however, is just short of terrible. When doing a tribute album, the objective is to take the original material, remain faithful to the concept of the sound of the song, not compromise the melody, BUT DO YOUR OWN VERSIONS! This is nothing but a collection of poorly performed "straight-forward" Abba songs. The CD starts off with take a chance on me and you think that it is a joke. My daughter was livid. The CD had not been in the player for more than 20 seconds and she removed it and said that it was shameful and disrespectful toward Abba. If you want a great laugh, try "Waterloo"! It sounds like it was done on a low grade model Casio keyboard. I will admit, I collect ALL Abba tribute CD's and they all have some shortcomings. (The techno one especially.) This one does have it's moments with a few cool "hooks" in it. Otherwise, it is pretty lame. If I were to suggest any good Abba tribute albums, you will have to do your homework, but it will be worth it. One is called 'A Heavy Metal Tribute to Abba'. It is brilliant. I think that there are two versions. This one has a picture of a black mirror ball on the cover. The other, I found at "Best Buy". It has a very simple powder blue cover and simply says ABBA...A tribute to ABBA in black. It is totally original, and features mostly piano, strings, light drumming, and a very talented female "Jazz type" singer. The arrangements are amazing and it is a great Abba escape when you want something a bit more mellow to listen to. I found the Heavy Metal one on e-bay. Both of them are excellent.
