Editorial Reviews

With Tribute To Bobby, one of the U.K.'s most soulful and distinctive voices - Mick Hucknall - pays homage to one of the most legendary vocalists from the American South, Bobby 'Blue' Bland. The twelve-track disc is the solo debut album from the Simply Red frontman, and it features Hucknall's emotionally direct and worldly-wise interpretations of songs that were originally popularized by Memphis-based blues icon Bland. Mojo magazine gives it '3 stars out of 5 -- Loose-limbed and often monstrously funky, Tribute To Bobby finds Hucknall singing from the heart."

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Tis Everything I Expected, And More - The Best June 19, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Anyone considering buying this Hucknall CD is most likely well versed in Simply Red, Mick Hucknall, the man and his music. If you love Mick and his voice, you will not be disappointed. He is seasoned, has lived life long enough to sing these great blues lyrics. You don't need to be familiar with Bland's music to hear and feel what the man was singing about 30, 40 years ago. Clapton's version of Farther On Up The Road will ring familiar, probably the most recognizable for those not used to listening to the blues. Not a bad song in the bunch. I was fortunate to buy this CD from the UK, so I got the short DVD of Mick talking to Bobby Blue Bland. Mick seems quite humble and is greeted with approval from the one person whose approval meant the most, Bobby. There is a short clip of B.B. King talking about Hucknall's renditions of these classic songs. It's a glowing review. It just doesn't get any better than that. Regardless of what some may see as not much of a stretch for Hucknall, that's not what this is all about. Mick really loves these songs, you can hear it, and see it should you get the DVD. Like any great artist, uncharted waters is often where the light shines the most.

5.0 out of 5 stars CRY CRY CRY June 30, 2008
Format:Audio CD
You know, I was a little worried about a new Mick Hucknall CD. Worried it wouldn't stand up to the best of Simply Red. Well, worry no more. This CD is brilliant, beautiful and THAT VOICE! Wether he sings solo or with Simply Red, Mick is just a genius. Has he ever sang a bad song or a bad version of a song? The last two SImply Red CD's were incredible and his fans won't be disappointed with his new venture into more R&B, Soul and Blues. He can do it all, and extremely well I might add. His version of Cry Cry Cry is amazing, I remember the original and this is as good if not better. His rendition of these great tunes is unbelievable, to me, Mick can do no wrong. He is one of those artist that I don't have to wait for a review or hear the CD before hand, he never lets me down. What a gift he has with that voice, he could sing the phone book and it would be great. I love this man and thank him for all the wonderful, amazing music he has shared with the world. Please! Never stop singing.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Tribute Is Passionate April 17, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Mick Hucknall, formerly known as the singer from Simply Red, created this hot tribute album to Bobby "Blue" Bland. Mick gets loose in his vocals and the arrangements are richly produced.

"Further On Up The Road" is a hot, cooking number. "Ain't That Loving You" has a driving rhythm. "I'm Too Far Gone (To Turn Around)" stays very true to the 50's sound. Mick's vocals soar into the stratosphere on "Stormy Monday Blues" - the arrangement is brilliant. Mick's vocal on "Cry, Cry, Cry" sears with passion. "Lead Me On" is so fine it brings me to my knees - it's simply just that tender of a love song.

Looking for Simply Red? This album is very different than the Simply Red era. However, if you appreciate Mick's vocals, you will find this collection worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW.... Very good CD, October 31, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
so why did i sleep on this? I love the CD Stay, as with all Simply Red Cd's. I keep for getting that Simply Red is a group, not a person. I first heard this song while switching up ipods in my car. As I was doing this the radio came on, and i hear this nice beat, and the voice of lead singer of Simply Red, so i am thinking, I know the voice, but did not recall the song, as I have all the CD's of Simply Red. So i had to hear the entire song, as another person is singing,, and later to find out it's Bobby Blue Bland. I had to search the net for any new simply red stuff. I could not find it until i did a search for the song 'Up the Road'. Bang! I found it, so i see this is the lead singer of simply red, and this has been out since the summer. I had to download this , and later i will get the CD so i can read all the credits and stuff. I enjoy this, and Glad to know he is still with the group.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music! November 22, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This CD is a great find - just perfect to listen to at work - not too jarring for those around you. I love it....the songs and the voice are terrific. Any of my coworkers who have passed my desk while I was playing this CD actually stopped to asked who was singing. And a few actually bought it after that. A good find.

Odd choice of music for Hucknall. He obviously loves Bland, but he is not a blues singer, nor does he try to be. Consequently, the sound is odd. Read more
