5.0 out of 5 stars Still great after 20 years, October 14, 2007

I bought this album (well... same title, same list of musicians, same tracks) in London UK in 1988. It was billed as "Louis Ramirez and his Latin Jazz Ensemble" and released on Caiman records in 1986 (the year Cal Tjader passed away) and then Ace Records in 1988. Louie Ramirez worked magic with the vibes, and Paquito d'Rivera wasn't billed as co-band leader but he sure played his heart out on alto sax. Listen to Milestones and you'll see what I mean (it's a brilliant arrangement and my favorite cut). I still listen to this album a lot after 20 years, and when I started putting my vinyl onto CD, this was the very first record I converted. It's a shining example of energetic Latin Jazz done right. This is a true classic in my collection, and I'd say odds are others will treasure it as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Class, February 20, 2010
This review is from: Tribute to Cal Tjader (Audio CD)
He's right.Suffice it to say, this is one of my very favourite albums. Superb Latin Jazz of the very highest order. With LR on vibes, and both Paquito and Mario Rivera on saxes, with Mario on flute now and again. Terrific flowing rhythmic arrangements,it cooks. There are 3 vocal tracks, with chorus rather than solos, one being a slow one,but even THAT is good, with Mario providing counterpoint on flute to the vocals. A natural double instrument for a saxist, tho' I don't remember where I've heard him play flute before. Don't know why it should be a natural double- embouchure completely different, but I digress. Would sound great LOUD at the pool(Haven't got one? OK,well play it loud wherever you are). I've played "El Titere" at our disco, great dance track, because it hits non-latin music lovers too. Sheer joy.
