3.0 out of 5 stars Honor Your Father and Mother...Good Idea!...But..., July 13, 2006
This review is from: The Tribute (Audio Cassette)
This review refers to "The Tribute" by Dennis Rainey/audio cassette edition(abridged).

Dennis Rainey presents a well thought out way to honor your parents. One that will let them know how much you love and appreciate them. Something they can hold in their hands,or hang on the wall for all the world to see. A written tribute by you. A tribute you have taken the time to spell out all the wonderful things they have done for you, how they raised you, so that you are the person you are today. Something you can present to them as a gift, read it to them and then give them a nice framed document.Acknowledge the sacrifices they made, and how much you love them for who they are. You can make them for your mother and father together, or separately. It is a way to heal wounds, and close rifts that may have occurred over the years. And I think any parent would feel their life is complete with something so special from their child.

Rainey gives great examples of tributes others have made and has them read them in the book. He reads his own as well. The tributes are touching and real. He wants parents to get they respect the deserve for the job they did. And it all makes sense. Even if you are the parent, it makes you want to be a better one. There were though a couple of things about the book that kept me from giving a glowing review.

One is that it was quite preachy. Often he quoted the bible, which in itself is fine. After all Honor Your Mother and Father is one of the commandments. But too often, he said that finding Jesus will make you a better person, able to forgive and forget, etc. I felt that, this made it sound like if you weren't a Christian that making this "Tribute" wasn't a possibility for you. He stated that we shouldn't force religion on anyone, yet I felt that is exactly what he was doing.

Early on in the book, he talks about his relationship with his mother. When he was 3, his mother threw a pencil at him out of anger. A piece of lead is still embedded in his cheek, right below the eye she narrowly missed. Two years later, when he was 5, she tied him to the bedpost for misbehaving. He laughs off these events, by saying he for sure deserved this treatment. Deserved it? This is where I was thrown for a loop. It's a wonderful and liberating feeling to find forgiveness, for all parties concerned, but to actually validate the abuse is going a little to far.It just sends the wrong message. That was my immediate impression at least.

I think honoring your parents with such a tribute, though, is a great idea. And Rainey does inspire, instruct and motivate well. It is something that will make you think back over the years, to the good and bad of it all. Forgive them for being human and not doing everything perfectly, thank them for the little things that made a big difference in your life.

This audio book is abridged, but you'll get the idea of the how and why. There are 2 cassettes, running about 2 hours 15 min. total, with a nice reading, and very good quality sound. The cassettes are each packaged in plastic cassette holders and there is an outer cardboard box.

A beautiful gift to your parents...your words!....Laurie
