5.0 out of 5 stars music that moves the heart, May 30, 2002
This review is from: Tribute (Audio CD)
I have always loved Dougie MacLean's arrangement of Robert Burns' songs. Most of his discs have at least one. "Tribute" is a treasure trove of Burns songs. It makes for one of Dougie's best discs.

Of the eleven songs on "Tribute," seven are by Burns; Tannahill and Gow have two songs each. Gow's songs are both instrumental pieces of beauty. The highest complement I can give those by Tannahill is that they fit nicely with the Burns songs (I dare you not to get "Are Ye Sleepin' Maggie" stuck in your head).

The absolute masterpieces here are the exceedingly beautiful "Banks and Braes," the cutting insight of "For A' That," and the best version of "Auld Lang Syne" you are likely ever to hear.

The music of Dougie MacLean always moves the heart. The three songwriters represented here do the same. "Tribute" is a powerful musical document. It features an artist at the height of his powers playing the music that he loves.

I give "Tribute" my highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite composer, May 9, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Tribute (Audio CD)
I was introduced to Dougie MacLean from a single cut on an anthology CD. What a find! The instrumentals are hauntingly beautiful (I have literally played Neil Gow's lament for 4 hours at a time). The vocals are superb interpretations of poetry by Robert Burns and Robert Tannahill. Not only did I immediately buy every CD by Maclean, I also bought poetry compilations by Burns and Tannahill. A wholehearted endorsement to all....

The beauty of the cuts on this album bring tears to my eyes every time I hear it. It is money well spent and I have given many copies as treasured gifts to worthy friends. You'll never forget it and you'll play it again and again.

This is my favorite Dougie MacLean CD. His interpretations of these historic songs are sensitive and thoughful, strong and clear. One can easily hear how dedicated Dougie is to this project. Also, a wonderful introduction to Scottish music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, October 10, 2001

This was the first album of Dougie's that I purchased, and what an introduction! For anyone who hasn't listened to Dougie MacLean before, I would recommend this album as a good starting point. I was totally hooked from the first track and HAD to start collecting all of his albums.

The CD is a mix of original arrangements of traditional songs. I was so totally blown away with the haunting `Neil Gow's Lament' that I bought myself a fiddle, and started to play again.

But, Every track is a gem and I guarantee it will soon have you searching for more of his CD's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brings me back to the pub in Edinburgh, March 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tribute (Audio CD)
I first heard Tribute in a pub in Edinburgh called The Hebrides, where the locals bring in their favorite CDs to share a listen with friends. I was immediately arrested by the haunting vocals and polished, yet authentic scores. If you want to gain a true feeling of Scotland, pour yourself a single malt, sit back and listen.

Dougie Maclean never disappointments, but it would be hard for him to top this wonderful collection of songs by three of Scotland's masters. My personal favorite is Ca' the Yowes, but you can't go wrong with any of these. Bravo, and may he do more of the old songs!
