Biography

Becoming a trailblazing Country Music superstar was an improbable destiny for Charley Pride, especially considering his humble beginnings as a sharecropper’s son on a cotton farm in Sledge, Mississippi. His unique journey to the top of the music charts includes a tumultuous detour through the world of Negro league, minor league and semi-pro baseball as well as many long years of labor alongside… Read more in Amazon's Charley Pride Store

Editorial Reviews

"Who better to sing the songs made famous by ""Gentleman Jim"" Reeves, than Charley Pride? Jim Reeves was the epitome of the sophisticated Country Music that producer and record mogul Chet Atkins developed in the early 1960s with what became known as the ""Nashville Sound."" It was a new kind of Country Music; lush, more sophisticated than was ever attempted before and Jim Reeves (alongside Patsy Cline) was its greatest exponent. Tragically, just as he was at the height of his fame and success Reeves was killed in a plane crash. Shortly thereafter, Atkins, who was Reeves' record producer and the head of his record label RCA, stumbled across Charley Pride, another young man whose voice sent shivers down his spine. Like Reeves, Charley has been a massive seller, an international star and an ambassador for Nashville's music. Like Reeves, Charley is also beloved around the world as a Country Music icon and the owner of one of the most inspiring and richest voices in popular music." --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE OF COPY PROTECTION, September 22, 2001
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tribute to Jim Reeves (Audio CD)
I regret buying this CD due to the copy protection. I've spent 15 minutes trying to play this thing on my PC and still have not heard the 1st note of music. It's a total pain in the butt.
The CD plays fine in my car, however I like to listen to CD's at work and I'll be damned if I want to jump through hoops to play them. I've tried to contact Charley Pride via his web-site, but the email link is broke. I wonder if it was intentional.
If you want to play this CD on your PC or if your stereo has a combination CD/DVD player, think twice before putting out your hard earned money.

2.0 out of 5 stars great CD but some issues with car cd players, September 22, 2001

This review is from: Tribute to Jim Reeves (Audio CD)
i love this CD - my dad used to be a big fan of 'gentleman jim' and it is great to hear charley singing his songs. all the songs are great but 'blue boy' and 'adios amigo' (which brought a tear to my eye) are the highlights.

i had no problems with the copy protection until i went to play the CD in my new car and sure enough, it doesn't work. I would tape a copy for the car but my new car like most only has a CD player. charley seems like a pretty smart guy and i'm sure he wouldn't have done this on purpose. obviously the copy system still has a few bugs! as for now i guess i will just listen at home.

without that issue, definitely a five star CD for fans of jim and charley. hopefully they will rerelease it in a better format that works with all CD players.

3.0 out of 5 stars Charley - You Are on the Wrong Side of the Issue, February 8, 2002
By
David Sichak (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tribute to Jim Reeves (Audio CD)
I have this CD. I also have the Australian CD version of the same album of songs and includes more songs in a tribute to Jim Reeves but guess what - the Australian release is not encrypted.

Charley, the music industry has lied to the public from day one. When they dropped vinyl to go to CD they claimed they had to double the prices of albums from 7.98 to 15.98 to 'cover the costs'. but everyone knows now what a lie that is.

On top of that, we know that they also use the most ridiculous accounting sytems in which nothing ever makes a profit except when it comes to their bottom line. The music industry has sat on their collective butts when the internet became popular and think that they can continue to rip people off.

Instead of trying to sue people and thinking that they're 'losing' money because of the internet - they should be looking for ways to improve things and taking advantage of the added interest the internet has brought to music.

Charley, your music has always been the best, a cut above the noised that they call country today. I'll forgive you for this release for I think you only did it for the publicity. The fans are not the problem. The music industry is the problem.

Seek out and find the Australian version of this CD -
RAJON - RMGR0107 - it has 21 selections in his tribute to jim Reeves. The 'copy protected' version only has 15. You can't have it both ways.

Just say no to so-called copy protected Cd's - we have a right to do whatever we please for our own use with the music we purchase. And quit trying to rip us off with your outrageous prices.

Overall - this is a great album to listen to as are all of Charley's albums. One could only wish he'd do more of these types - such as the tunes he's done by Brook Benton in concert - Think Twice is a great tune he's done onstage. REcord those kinds of tunes...
