5.0 out of 5 stars Buddys groove thing, October 22, 2002
By
This review is from: Tribute to Jimi Hendrix (Audio CD)
An excellent live album! It features Buddy on drums/lead vocals with only a guitarist and bassist backing him up. A powerhouse trio. And powerhouse they are! Buddy has never been a technical master of the drums but he has one of the best solid backbeats in the business and he can sing and play at the same time which is a big plus! The guitarist on this album is Great! He is no Jimi Hendrix but he knows how to achieve the right tone and feel for each song. He plays his own style without trying to copy Hendrix. The Bass guitarist is by far one of the best Funk Rock players on the planet. His solos on a couple of tunes are a joy to listen to.{slap funk style}He also helps with the vocals. These guys are so tight it sounds as if they played together since they were kids. Put three top notch musicians on stage with tons of energy combined with heartfelt playing and the result is what you will hear on this recording. I do have two complaints. The vocals should have been recorded louder, and I dont care for the Beatles version of come together.Final thoughts: Lots of Great Funk Rock to be heard here! For fans of live recordings this one is a must! To any Bass players out there check this one out! Enjoy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Countering Those 5-Star Reviews, April 7, 2004

Mad Dog "maddog6969" (TimbuckThree, Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tribute to Jimi Hendrix (Audio CD)
I collect not only Hendrix music but also Hendrix tributes and was pretty shocked to see three 5-star reviews on this disc. I could be talked into giving this one 3 stars, but that's about it. It just doesn't move me. Jimi tributes are always an uphill battle in my opinion. Artists often avoid trying to play a song similar to the way Jimi played it and it's easy to see why - just who are you going to get that can touch the feel he put into the guitar playing and singing?

Don't get me wrong - I'm a bigtime fan of Band of Gypsys and have no axe to grind with Buddy at all. I'm so happy he was there to help Jimi out in '69 and '70 when he was so in need of TLC. But this disc just does not, to me, evoke the soul of Jimi as much as I'd expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddy was Jimi's friend., August 5, 1999

Great CD. I loved Jimi & Buddy's interplay in the BOGs, and Buddy brings his heart out, playing for his friend.
