4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise
At first glance, I didn't know what to expect from Denny Laine's newest album. However, I was pleasantly surprised to hear how well Denny sounds after being black-listed for the past 20 years. On Blackbird, it seems Denny almost mocks one of Paul's favorite tunes. However, this album seems to represent a forgive and forget attitude on Laine's behalf. Contrary to...

2.0 out of 5 stars A good idea played very wrongly
Dont get me wrong, I am a huge Paul McCartney and Wings fan, that's why I bought this album. I loved Denny's songs with Wings back in the 70's. But, unfortunately, time has took its toll on our friend Denny. The songs are poorly sung and sound like a chicken being rung around its neck occasionally. Contrary to other reviews, the masterfully produced bonus tracks which beg for Paul's direction and input, lead one to wonder if the tracks have a place in the forthcoming Wings Anthology? True Wings and McCartney fans must BUY THIS CD, you won't be let down.

Often, Denny strains to get at the right notes and often hits the wrong note entirely. OUCH! Again, the instruments play the songs very well, but it doesn't matter if the voice is bad. Only two songs save the day..GO NOW and SEND ME THE HEART. Otherwise, avoid this at all costs. Sorry Denny, I love you but this album doesnt do you justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm and Intimate - A Great CD, June 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tribute to Paul Mccartney & Wings (Audio CD)
Denny Laine's stunningly beautiful tribute album, is warm and cozy. His fresh versions of old material sound so intimate, you'd swear that Denny was sitting right there in your living room playing the songs for you with his acoustic guitar.

I loved Wings back 20-25 years ago when they were on top of the charts, and the songs on this CD remind me why I loved Wings.

Thanks Denny, for rekindling old memories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Your money would be better spent on the real McCartney, April 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tribute to Paul Mccartney & Wings (Audio CD)
This CD isn't anything to get excited about, and I would suggest to any Beatles/McCartney fan that you save your money or spend it on something created by an actual Beatle, unless you're a collector. There is nothing particularly interesting or original in Laine's interpretations; in fact, it's bland and at times plodding. The arrangements are dull and he often sounds as if he's straining to sing the notes. Certainly nothing is overproduced, but unfortunately that may be the CD's biggest virtue. I hate to be unkind about Laine because he brought an awful lot to Wings in the band's heyday. However, that was 25 years ago, and his virtual disappearance from music since Wings' demise shows. I'm glad that Laine feels enough amity toward McCartney to want to pay him tribute, though I suspect that the making of this CD was motivated as much by financial need as it was by friendship. While this isn't a bad CD it's also not a particularly good one, and proves why Laine will be remembered as a stalwart sideman and not as a first-tier talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Well Done Tribute, March 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tribute to Paul Mccartney & Wings (Audio CD)
When I purchased this CD, I figured it would be interesting to hear Denny Laine's versions of the Wings songs. I knew it would be pretty good, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well done the songs are. Laine's voice is excellent and he does a very admirable job singing the songs of his legendary former bandmate. The arrangements are excellent, especially Listen to What the Man Said, done with only an acoustic guitar and violin. Other standouts are gorgeous versions of Mull of Kintyre and Blackbird, a rocking Silly Love Songs and Band on the Run, and the obscure Wings songs Deliver Your Children and Children Children. The only down parts of the album are a couple of the bonus tracks and Send Me the Heart, an awful country song.

I really enjoy listening to this CD. If you're a McCartney fan, this CD is a must pickup. I HIGHLY recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not extraordinary, May 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tribute to Paul Mccartney & Wings (Audio CD)
Well, there are many versions of old Wings songs here, probably demos or masters recorded in the seventies, all of them sung by Denny. He's not an splendid singer, but the songs are really good. I specially recommend one of them, co-written with Paul McCartney, by the time of the Nashville sessions -1973-, which sounds much like "Sally G". Paul also does the backing vocals. It's called "Send me the heart".

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, June 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tribute to Paul Mccartney & Wings (Audio CD)
This is my favorite CD. "Tribute" albums aren't popular with critics, but the songs on this CD are well sung and the music is well played. Denny Laine shows off a great voice and plays gorgeous acoustic guitar throughout the CD.

Wings got a lot of criticism in their day, but Denny Laine shows what an underrated musician he is. My favorite songs are Listen To What the Man Said, Rolling Tide, Silly Love Songs, and Deliver Your Children.

Do yourself a huge favor and pick this one up. It will put a smile on your face and I guarantee you won't be let down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wings At the Sound of Denny Laine, March 18, 2004

Denny Laine was an original member of Wings, and the only person besides Paul & Linda McCartney to stay in the group for it's entire 10 years. You could be excused for not knowing his name, though, if you bought the Wingspan CD or DVD from a couple years ago. I think Paul might have mentioned Denny once in the entire 90 minute documentary, and overlooked his songs when compiling the Wingspan CD. This CD, recorded in 1996, has Denny revisiting the Wings songbook, singing some of the songs he wrote and sang with the group, as well as some of McCartney's best known Wings hits. Most of the songs get the unplugged treatment, which works especially well on "Mull of Kintyre", "Blackbird", and "Deliver Your Children'. "Silly Love Songs" and "Band on the Run" are full band arrangments. Denny's voice is much bluesier and rough edged than Paul's, but that is a plus in my book. Denny's also a very underrated guitarist, and the sparse arrangements give him a chance to show off his chops where appropriate. The bonus songs are worth hearing, too. Three of them come from his excellent 1996 CD "Reborn". A remake of his Moody Blues hit "Go Now" is also included.

1.0 out of 5 stars Woeful, July 25, 2008
This review is from: Tribute to Paul Mccartney & Wings (Audio CD)
I am a big Paul McCartney fan, and loved Wings. But Denny Laine, a founder of that band does a simply woeful production here.

Several songs he simply bores the listener.

The only good thing was to hear a song "Send Me the Heart" which Wings never released.

The 4 "bonus tracks" are not Wings songs at all.

Then, a friend of mine asked "Why would Denny want to do a 'tribute' to a band he was in?" Good question. Seems like he needed a little extra cash - especially when one can also purchase "Denny Laine: Performs the Hits of Wings"

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea in Great Songs!, March 21, 1999
This review is from: Tribute to Paul Mccartney & Wings (Audio CD)
It was a great idea of Denny Laine to throw a disk with the best of Paul and Wings, the recordings in its majority bring new arrangements but not leaving the original a lot, its beautiful voice rocker complements the good disk. It only missed the disk to do an bookled with photos and letters. (Source GET BACK JOURNAL Nș11 - Publication of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
