Editorial Reviews

Rita Lee, Sergio Días & Arnaldo Baptista were just in their 20s when they founded the legendary Brazilian group Os Mutantes in 1966, writing the songs that, for decades later, still prove influential to artists across the globe. On the new tribute album, 'El Justiciero Cha Cha Cha,' justiciero musicians from Café Tacvba to Fito Páez & Aterciopelados (in collaboration with Dias), revisit and reinvent the aesthetic legacy of the band that masterfully fused psychedelia and tropicalia. The result is an extraordinary album that includes illustrations by original group member Baptista.

1. Ave Lúcifer - La Manzana Cromática Protoplasmática
2. Vida de Cachorro - Aterciopelados & Sérgio Dias
3. Hey Boy - Rosal
4. Beso Exagerado - Martín Buscaglia
5. O Relógio - Café Tacvba
6. 2001 - Refree
7. Beija-me, amor - Liliana Herrero & Arnaldo Antunes
8. El Justiciero - Omar Giammarco
9. Mutantes e Seus Cometas no País do Baurets - Fernando Cabrera
10. No Te Vas a Perder por Ahí - Pablo Dacal
11. Cualquier Bobada - Manuel Onís
12. Balada del Loco - La Chicana
13. A Minha Menina - Fito Paez
14. Disculpe, Babe - Silvia Pérez
15. Panis et Circenses - Pequeña Orquestra Reincidentes

If you are hesitating because, well, who could play Os Mutantes besides themselves, don't. This is a most interesting collection of covers-- some familiar tunes, some obscure, played by a variety of great contemporary Latin American groups. A rare treat!

Have to admit, here's a tribute CD that I never expected to see - homage to the Brazilian late '60's psych band Os Mutantes. English translation: The Mutants. Dummy me, I had a chance to catch the Mutants on a rare U.S. outing and I missed the gig altogether. Eighteen track collection with one song from each band / artist - obviously I've never heard of any of these contributors. Tunes that I got the most out of are Rosal with their cover "Hey Boy", the total swinging Buscaglia (looks to have three CD's out to their own credit) giving their remake of "Beso Exagerado", the soothing Giammarco's "El Justiciero", the ballad-like "Chicana" by Balada del Loco and Ana Prada's "Fuga N II". Grew on me a bit more after the second spin.
