4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars
My fellow New Yorker (?) has an obvious issue here.
There are a couple of weak tracks on the disc but it's far from "horrid" and "disgusting".
I share the suspicion of a previous reviewer that some fella' here has a string attached to that "string tribute".

The idea of replacing or matching Maynard is idiotic. This is a tribute album where various bands are...

What is that? I thought that it'll be a good record. Tool's songs in new arrangements. New look at old songs. But this is [bad]. Some disco beats and [bad] vocals. If u like TOOL DON'T BUY IT!

The idea of replacing or matching Maynard is idiotic. This is a tribute album where various bands are playing their versions of the originals. Duh! The style, the sound and the vocals are going to be different of course.

Taking it further: "A women cannot sing a Tool song" is (definitely a sexist!) and just about the stupidest comment I have ever read on Amazon's review boards.

To prove that wrong right off the bat, Maya Hyena's "Stinkfist" (sung by a woman) happened to be the hardest rocking track on this tribute. I can bravely say it is amazing and there are other good tracks here that cannot be denied. Prison Sex by Mists Of Avalon has a REALLY cool gloomy overtone, Intolerance by Dragon Style
Has a LOT of energy. Razed In Black, Haujobb, and Rosetta Stone are holding up just fine.

I'm not fond of the techno bands myself, but (hint) I learned how to program a CD player (and I can't remember EVER buying a CD where I liked every single song)
Tool included - while I AM a Tool fan.

Well, it's a tribute album. And generally speaking, a tribute album is nothing more than some label throwing together a gaggle of sorry unknown bands in a thinly disguised attempt to scam money off some other label's big draw. Add the fact that this is a CLEOPATRA release, and you've tossed in some bad goth covers of what could conceivably be the best band in the last decade (Cleopatra's motto: 'If you can write it and make money, we can cover it with a Casio and five bucks...'). OK, OK... Now there are some fairly well known groups here(Haujobb, Rosetta Stone, Razed in Black) if you know your tribute albums (haha), and some of these covers are kinda interesting (the Haujobb, Maya Hyena and Translation Collapse tracks I am embarrased to admit I kinda dug), BUT if you are a TOOL purist as I am, NONE of these tracks are going to sound right, much less good, to you. I would say that this isn't a horrid tribute album, but it sounds about as funky as the Tori Amos tribute this label put out not so long ago. The bottom line: If you really want to hear this, either check out the samples or download the album, or even buy it used, it is NOT worth full price. And if you REALLY have to have a TOOL tribute in your music library, get the string tribute, you can bypass some bad Depeche Mode vocals that way.

2.0 out of 5 stars it was a good thought, October 27, 2002

I was very excited to see a Tool tribute album, but very disappointed by the time it was spinning in my cd player. The cd has great intentions..anyone attempting to pay tribute to an amazing band like Tool has great intentions, but these bands have nowhere near the musical creativity and technical talent that Tool has. Granted, their creativity and talent are very rare gifts, but the cd just didn't turn out that well, and doesn't appeal to me at all. My advice is save your money, but if your goal is to own every single piece of merchandise with the word "TOOL" on it, go ahead and pick it up. There are a few moments of faint musical enlightenment, but for the most part, I'm not liking this spin on Tool's songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is a GOOD tribute, August 7, 2002

I really don't understand why people give this CD such a low rating. This is an interpretation of Tool. What fun would it be if it sounded the exact same? When i bought this I listened to it as a completely different cd, not your normal Tool stuff. What would've been more interesting would be if they were remixes instead of a whole new thing. That's why I can't argue that some of the songs are hard to reconize, but i think that they're still REALLY good. Tool is my favorite band in the world, and if you like them as well as me then you'll certainly find this CD interesting and different. But, then of course I like the genre of the interpretations, which is mostly industrial and techno. The best tracks on this cd are Reflection and Stinkfist. Also, how can you say that a girl can't sing Tool songs??? I think the Stinkfist on here is great. But anyways, that's just my opinion. Overall, this CD should've just been remixes. If you want to buy it, I say go ahead it's really good but you have to keep an open mind.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, bad idea..., October 29, 2002

I love Tool, they are by far my favorite band. After buying and liking the string tribute I thought this albumn might be a good idea. Nope. This albumn just plain ... While I support the idea of covering Tool's music I don't support people who have little musical talent trying to do so. I'm serious, some of the songs made me laugh out loud. Aenima was particulary horrid. Most of the others wern't too far off either. The rendition of Stinkfist is acceptable, I liked hearing a female voice covering Maynard. Other than this song and perhaps Prison Sex the rest bite. So save your money, if you are rabid tool fan like me you will most likely not appreciate the desecration of their music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elitist Stuckficks, April 20, 2002
This review is from: Tribute to Tool (Audio CD)
I've met too many Tool fans, and even dated one who was too elitist about Tool. That would argue me over every tiny detail. No one could be better than Tool in anyway, they were completely close minded. Isn't Tool all about being open minded, and pushing in different directions? I think the tribute was good, it allowed artists of another genre the chance to tackle well established HARD ROCK songs. And they brought out the feelings they got from the songs. Razed in Black, Rosetta Stone and Electric Hellfire Club especially did great covers. I think some particular Tool fans are being WAY WAY too harsh on their reviews. Are they fans of electronic/industrial music? Most likely Not. Being a fan of electronic/industrial/hard rock music, I enjoyed the tribute a lot. I'm also a huge Tool fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good tribute album, April 12, 2003

One of the better tribute albums to any band that I've heard. These are some of the top-notch underground bands, and they've done a solid job of representing their interpretation of Tool.

Don't get me wrong. Tool is a killer band. Don't expect to listen to them and hear a better tool. Instead, consider this a separate album with a familiar feel. They've done a great job.

Maya Hyena (as always) are fantastic. Why isn't there a bigger fanbase for this fabulous group? A fantastic (and VERY hot) singer, with some of the STRONGEST female vocals I've ever heard. And an incredibly talented band to back her to boot. Stinkfist is a great song by Tool, but they manage to give it a little twist and do it very well, their own way.

Razed in Black and Electric Hellfire Club are great as usual too. A very solid album over all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tool with more bleeps and less vocals, July 11, 2002
This review is from: Tribute to Tool (Audio CD)
I bought this cd hoping for a tool tribute which Is what I got but not how I expected. As has been said some of the tracks (especially the first one) are hard to recognise. However if you listen to the album and don't expect it to sound like tool *but rather* like these bands interpretations of their music its not bad. I'm not that big a fan of the type of music but its certainly interesting. The last track on the album is probably the most original interpretation in my mind with the rest all sounding a bit similar (although as I said I'm not a big fan of the music). I'd reccomed buying it for Tool fans but only if youve already got all the original releases and the string tribute in your collection. If in doubt listen to some of the online clips. Anyway at least the songs aren't being murdered by boy bands who can't think up their own yet...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gothic Tool, April 9, 2005
This review is from: Tribute to Tool (Audio CD)
LOL I've been reading the other reviews and I didn't see any mention of Tool being covered by GOTHIC bands on this CD... All of these bands are from the gothic genre and that's why they don't sound identical to the originals... Why would you want to buy a CD twice anyway? I think it's great that other bands, from different genres took on the challenge of covering the all mighty TOOL... If you don't like gothic music, don't buy this CD. Period.
