4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff a pity the master wasn't still here...
Normally with tribute albums you are not exactly sure what to expect but on this tribute to Suba I am very impressed. There are some reworkings of what are now classic songs from Sao Paolo Confessions as well as a few Suba tracks that would probably have been released soon after Sao Paolo confessions.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Techno!
I was inspired to purchase this cd after loving Bebel Giberto's "Tanto Tempo", as Suba was credited for one of my favorite songs. However, for those who revel in the true Brazilian sounds of samba and bossa nova, Suba's sound is not what you are accustomed to. Normally with tribute albums you are not exactly sure what to expect but on this tribute to Suba I am very impressed. There are some reworkings of what are now classic songs from Sao Paolo Confessions as well as a few Suba tracks that would probably have been released soon after Sao Paolo confessions.

Some of the tracks are posthumous collaborations and some are live collaborations between Suba and variuos artists. Some of the remakes have actually, dare I say improved on the originals and overall it is a great album to have in your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tribute - But you won't forget the original, May 1, 2002
This review is from: Tributo (Audio CD)
This tribute to the late Suba is a nice piece of work. Tastefully done, with some unreleased tracks from other artists in the nova bossa nova movement are all included. Also, artists from his debut Sao Paulo confessions were also included, such as Katia B, Cibelle, Joao Parahyba. Others contributing were the growing Apollo 9, Marina Lima, Boyz From Brazil and Buscemi.

While this tribute was well done, it certainly will not make you forget Sao Paulo confessions. Rather, it will probably make you appreciate it more. The darkness and subtly and the capture of the spectrum of sound in Sao Paulo confessions just couldn't be captured, despite how good some of the remakes of Suba's tracks were. For instance, listening to Segredo on Tribute then listening to it on Sao Paulo confessions makes you realize how special a talent Suba was. But I felt this most with "Sins Before Dawn", in which the Sao Paolo Confessions one is just so dark and fluid. But the song "Are You Sleeping" touches a nerve to me because it makes me wonder what other gems could Suba have made + reminds me that he was taken far too early. The sound of that track (11) is just so so Suba.

I liked this CD. It certainly is a nice buy, and while it doesn't live up to Sao Paulo confession standards, it is an outstanding tribute to Suba and his work. If you were/are a Suba fan, definitely pick this up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suba's echoing soul, January 5, 2007

Suba died much to early and in a tragic manner(story has it he tried to save some music in his burning house rather than get out)leaving a void in a tragetory he had created but never fully achieved. His production work was innovative and top notch; his brief contribution to Brazilian-fusion-world-beat has set the standard for all who follow. The Serbian -born musicain /composers work on Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tiempo" and his own masterpiece "Sao Paulo Confessions" are discs that through their superlative qualities will be listened to for generations to come. This tribute CD is right up there with the aforementioned discs. If you haven't heard the others there is no problem with this being your starting point; however , starting with "Sao Paulo Confessions" than "Tanto Tiempo" will give you a better perspective of his artistry. There is not a dud on this disc; only degrees of excellence. There is a continuity and cohesive feel to the disc that is rare amongst a coming together of artists on one disc. Cibelle's "Seria, Amor de A'Aqua" is very catchy remake that sets the bar. Cibelle's other contributions are quite nice and sexy as in "Tantos Deseos." The JP and Suba duets "Futuro Primitivo I, II, III" are magnificent collaborations that if listened to back to back are amazing in their elaborate complex structure; the songs are spread throughout the disc but your I-Tunes can arrange them together. The live element of "Futuro Primitivo" enhances the give and take aspect of the percussion and electronic performance. The tribute version of Suba's "Na Neblina" takes on a completely different sound from the original on "Sao Paulo Confessions" but a worthwhile interpretation, although it is a bit spacey. If you liked the work of Suba than you will probably like this tribute. Try this bit of electronica but don't forget his original works too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suba & company, February 11, 2009

Suba was a revolutionary in the teeming city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Musical instruments and singers were his tools, and he helped found modern Brazilian electronica. After producing two excellent albums: "Tanto Tempo" with Bebel Gilberto; "Sao Paulo Confessions" by Suba, he died tragically in a studio fire. But not without leaving a few compositions behind, and his many dedicated friends. This tribute is an incredible collection of new bossa nova, remixes, electronica, and dedicated spirit and intensity on the part of songwriters and performers. For those of you who appreciate lounge and Brazilian jazz, this modern collection takes off where 'Confessions' just started.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy tribute, September 11, 2006
By
This review is from: Tributo (Audio CD)
Suba produced Bebel Gilberto's acclaimed album "Tanto Tempo",and did his own solo work "Sao Paulo Confessions" before his untimely passing in 1999.He was on the verge of the millenium;he had much potential."Tributo" is a worthy tribute to his work on "Sao Paulo Confessions".In some ways,it is superior to "Confessions" but also shows, tragically, how much talent was lost.

There are three brief live concert duets between Suba&Joao Parahyba called "Futuro Primitivo." One can understand the audience's enthusiasm.

Cibelle sings on two great tracks "Sereia"&"Tantos Desejos." It's no wonder Cibelle has succeeded in solo work.Zero dB reconstructs :Samba do Gringo Paulista" into a tribute to Brazil."Lagoa Pinheiros" is delightfully mysterious."Are you sleeping?" is perfect music for a '60s era "space age" lounge.Phil Asher's remix of "Voce Gusta" is jazzy. This album is perfect for those who enjoy Brazilian lounge music;this is perfect for chilling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Tribute to a Terrific Artist, May 19, 2004
This review is from: Tributo (Audio CD)
This is the import version of the tribute album to producer and musician, Suba. It came out in Spring of 2002 in the US and features a plethora of nu-bossa stars and various other musicians from Brazil and Europe that pay hommage to this talented musician. The label for this is Ziriguiboom/Crammed, but it is released in the US thanks to Six Degrees Music. Suba was an artist from Yugoslavia that lived in Sao Paulo that tragically died in a fire in 1999. Rumor has it the fire was started by a cigarette and he escaped the fire initially but died when he returned to his apartment to salvage some of his works.

I did enjoy this cd. The artists that remake his tunes include Boyz from Brazil, Juryman, Buscemi, The Funky Lowlives, Nicola Conte, Phil Asher and a few others. My favorite tunes and remakes on this are the live sounding Sereia as sung by protege Cibelle. Also, the track "Are You Sleeping" by another of Suba's diva's, Katia B., makes me realize how much I miss his music and wonder what other music he could have had in the pipeline. It seems like the perfect song for this cd - cool beats, going into a drum and bossa with the strings. I also dig the way "Tantos Desejos" was remade. The way the beat comes in and then drops is pretty sweet. And the Juryman remake to "Felicidade" is very funky. Rounding out the cds are bits and pieces of some of Suba's and Joao Parahyba's DJ sessions and samba sessions. The two good friends worked together on many projects, including the original "Sao Paulo Confessions" project.

If you are a Suba fan and miss his work, this is a MUST have. Not all of the remakes got me and nothings quite like the original but still, this is a very good release and fair tribute. If you do dig this and like Suba, then of course check out his first cd, music by Ramiro Musotto, Joao Parahyba and Fragmentorchestra. Also - he worked on a compilation called "Cairpirissima", Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo, Katia B's last album (not the new one). Cibelle also has an album out that might interest Suba fans too. Still, one can't help but wonder what other tunes Suba would have come out with and his genius is missed. Rest in Peace.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Techno!, March 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tributo (Audio CD)
I was inspired to purchase this cd after loving Bebel Giberto's "Tanto Tempo", as Suba was credited for one of my favorite songs. However, for those who revel in the true Brazilian sounds of samba and bossa nova, Suba's sound is not what you are accustomed to. After listening to a few tracks I was bored with the repetitive techno sound. While there are a few interesting sounds here, give me real musicians and sensuous rhythmns over electronic sound!
