5.0 out of 5 stars This trio has talent!
There's no doubt about it: Trick Pony rocks! Whether it's a male or female singing out the lead vocals, this CD is cram-packed with wonderful tunes. Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings have--you've no doubt read--joined up with the trio on "Big River." While I'll admit that those two are talented, and make a great combination with TP (NOT toilet paper), my...

3.0 out of 5 stars Spunky, Promising
When the rockabilly-tinged "Pour Me" crackled over the airwaves, the buzz started around Trick Pony. Although it could have flown higher, the self-titled debut album is a welcome blast of air in the too-often stale country atmosphere. No matter what the trio of Heidi Newfield, Ira Dean, and Keith Burns do on this album, it's chock full of spirit. The best...

There's no doubt about it: Trick Pony rocks! Whether it's a male or female singing out the lead vocals, this CD is cram-packed with wonderful tunes. Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings have--you've no doubt read--joined up with the trio on "Big River." While I'll admit that those two are talented, and make a great combination with TP (NOT toilet paper), my personal tastes run toward the more contemporary songs. "Every Other Memory" is a wonderful ballad, and is followed up by a harmony-master piece "More Like Me." "Just What I Do" is my favorite, combining great harmonies with a nice, fast-paced beat. "Stay In This Moment" makes you want to grab your loved one and curl up beside the fire. "On A Night Like This" and "Spent" are also greats. "Can't Say That On The Radio" is a slightly-ironic-humored breakup song. Trick Pony may be new to the stores, but they're a legend in their own way, and they'll be here for quite some time, making us dance and cry (at the same time!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great rocking country from Heidi and the boys, September 4, 2002

This review is from: Trick Pony (Audio CD)
This is a reminder of the kind of music with which Highway 101 shook up Nashville in the late eighties, Trick Pony are not quite as good as Paulette and the boys were, but they still have a lot going for them and should not be ignored.

The opening Pour me (as it's title suggests) is a great drinking song which really rocks, as most of the songs do. Lead singer Heidi shows she can be more than just a good-time rocker in a few songs, particularly on Now would be the time, a great country ballad, but it is the rocking songs that really matter here.

On a few songs, one of the men sing lead, but the style remains the same. This is great music for having a good time, far removed from the image some people have of country music. If you know somebody who think country is all about crying in their beer, this is one album that will shatter that image.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trick Pony? They should be called 'Holy Cow'!, March 25, 2001

Because that is what I thought when I heard this group and their toe-tapping first single "Pour Me". If this song does not make you want to move, check your pulse! "Party of One" is another women's anthem. (I saw an interview the band did and they said "Pour Me" was written as a women's anthem, I swear). The third track "Big River" is a fun romp, featuring Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. "Every Other Memory" is a haunting ballad - Heidi's voice will give you goosebumps. "Just What I Do" is a great song about what some of history's greatest figures did when they weren't "getting any". "One in a Row" has a great Carribean beat to it and is a great, upbeat, fun song, very much how Trick Pony is. "Now Would Be the Time" is another great ballad. Another notable track is the final "Not Hidden Track", it is hilarious outtakes from the studio and introduces the world to Heidi's 'snarf'.

This disc is a MUST HAVE!! Heidi's voice is phenomenal and Ira and Keith play with a real zeal that has been absent in country music as of late. They are kind of like the country Fleetwood Mac, I hope they will be around as long.

If you're looking for a toe tapping good time look no further, this cd is the best! With the slow haunting melodies interspersed with the loud rockabilly party music, it is a tasteful and fun mix of three beautiful voices. And if you really want to see something, go to one of their concerts, they are so full of electricity and life it will knock your socks off and leave you screaming for more!
