Book Description

February 1, 1998
Trained behavior patterns, popularly known as "tricks"are fun for canines and their masters. This book shows dog owners how to train an animal to perform both simple and more complicated tricks. The authors begin with four basic commands--sit, down, stand, and stay--that all dogs should know and obey. From there they progress to behaviors such as wave, sit up, bow, jump through a hoop, and weave through legs. Instructions for each of the book's 25 tricks are presented with tips to help owners work through problems, and suggestions for putting the animal's training to effective use--just for fun, in competitive shows, for roles in films, and many other situations. The dog-and-master team that progresses all the way through this volume's advanced exercises will be capable of public performance! Not every dog owner will want to go that far, but all dog owners can profit from the know-how that they'll find in these pages. 150 instructive how-to color photos, and a wealth of practical tips will make training easier for both master and pet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well put, good advice, April 17, 2001
This review is from: Trick is in the Training, The (Paperback)
If you are considering buying this book do it! The tricks are easy to teach and the problem section on each one is very helpful. It even give some of the more traditional hand signals to teach your dog. It also explain when and how to cue and reward the dog. Downside, food motivation only but if you are a good trainer you may find other motivators that'll work with your dog. Excellent pics. Recomended for all those wanting to train/play with their dogs and show-off with their friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars a neat little book, April 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Trick is in the Training, The (Paperback)
It is not a terribly in depth training manual, but it shows you how to train some dog tricks. If you really want to train your dog to do tricks, in addition to this book, get a gook on raising and training a puppy. That will give you some insight into the dog and how to effectively train, and this book shows the actual methods for specific tricks, a chapter most training books forgot. All in all, it is a neat little book well worth $8.
