Happy Halloween!,
By Laura Donaldson (Palmyra, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trick or Treat, Little Critter (Paperback)
I found this book while looking for someway to introduce Halloween to my two year old. He would become afraid of the masks and costumes he'd seen and I wanted him to be fully prepared for his first trick or treating. After reading this book he has requested it several times a day and is now talking excitedly about Halloween and his costume. The book is sweet and funny and talks about many of the traditions of Halloween.

Trick or Treat, Little Critter,

This review is from: Trick or Treat, Little Critter (Paperback)
ISBN 0307127915 - Printed in the USA (good for publisher Golden Books). Amazon has the book listed for 4 to 8 years olds, the book itself doesn't say. Little Critter fans are bound to like this one!
Little Critter and his family prepare for Halloween by buying candy, decorations and costumes. Baby brother isn't quite ready for Halloween, but Little Critter and his sister certainly are. They choose their costumes, go to a farm to choose a pumpkin and have a Halloween party at school before, finally, it's time to trick or treat. When they're ready to head home, Little Critter discovers a hole in his bag and suspects his dog has eaten what has fallen out. His little sister offers to share her bounty and all is well again. Gina and Mercer Mayer clearly have a winner on their hands with Little Critter and his clan and, for more Halloween with this crew, check out Little Critter: Happy Halloween, Little Critter!, as well. The text is simple enough for beginning readers, but the story feels just a little rushed - that can be overcome with a nice leisurely reading pace. As is often the case for me, with Mayer's books, it's the illustrations that really make the book. There are plenty of Halloween-ish, slightly spooky, but not scary, things going on but there are also lots of fun and amusing details that you'll notice more of with each reading. Not frightening at all, this is a good introduction to Halloween's more pleasant aspects for the youngest kids. - AnnaLovesBooks
