Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The serenity of Tinker's Cove, Maine, is shattered when an arsonist creates havoc and sends amateur sleuth Lucy Stone, introduced in [Mistletoe Murder], on her [third] adventure. After several historic buildings are damaged or destroyed by fire, the stakes escalate when the body of socialite Monica Mayes is found inside the charred wreckage of her summer home. Lucy, mother of four, including new baby Zoe, casts a suspicious eye on Roland Mayes, Monica's unfaithful husband, and decides to do a little investigating of her own. Lucy's husband, Bill, a restoration carpenter, has reluctantly joined the local historic commission, which has recently denied the plans submitted by unsavory Randy Lenk to remodel his gas station. Another suspicious fire coincides with Halloween trickery and leads to a red hot finale. Although the plot is thin, the charming setting and likable cast, including crotchety old Miss Tilley, former librarian and head of the historic council, and Lucy herself, juggling motherhood and murder, make for enjoyable reading.

From Kirkus Reviews

Not content with a flickering jack-o'-lantern for Halloween, somebody has torched the old Hopkins Homestead. It's the fourth case of arson Tinker's Cove has seen in five months, and the most deadly, since Homesteader Monica Mayes, enjoying a rare off- season overnight stay at her summer house, was killed in the flames. Whodunit? The obvious suspect for Lucy Stone (Tippy-Toe Murder, 1994, etc.) is the widower, Dr. Roland Mayes, who's been extending his gynecological research to bodybuilding bimbo Krissy Wright. But would Mayes really go to the trouble of burning down all those other buildings in preparation for offing his inconvenient wife? Forget the mystery; the burning questions here (and the only time the tale flickers to life) concern the commercialization of rural Maine, the need of older drivers to turn in their licenses, and the breast-feeding of Zoe, the latest among fecund Lucy's progeny. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. More About the Author

I started writing in the late '80s when I was attending graduate classes at Bridgewater State College. I wanted to become certified to teach high school English and one of the required courses was Writing and the Teaching of Writing. My professor suggested that one of the papers I wrote for that course was good enough to be published and I sent it off to Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine's Department of First Stories. I got $100 for the story and I've been writing ever since. The teaching, however, didn't work out.

My books draw heavily on my experience as a mother of three and my work as a reporter for various weekly newspspers on Cape Cod. My heroine, Lucy Stone, is a reporter in the fictional town of Tinker's Cove, Maine, where she lives in an old farmhouse (quite similar to mine on Cape Cod!) with her restoration carpenter husband Bill and four children. As the series has progressed the kids have grown older, roughly paralleling my own family. We seem to have reached a point beyond which Lucy cannot age -- my editor seems to want her to remain forty-something forever -- though I have to admit I am dying to write "Menopause is Murder"!

I usually write one Lucy Stone mystery every year and "Wicked Witch Murder" came out in August, 2010. I fell in love with one character, a four-year-old boy named Nemo, and he makes a second appearance in a Christmas novella included in "Gingerbread Cookie Murder," which also features tales by Laura Levine and Joanne Fluke, due to be published in October, 2010. I've just finished "English Tea Murder" in which Lucy and her friends visit England, coming out sometime in 2011. My books are classified as cozies but a good friend insists they are really "comedies of manners" and I do enjoy expressing my view of contemporary American life.

Now that the kids are grown -- I now have two grandchildren -- my husband and I are enjoying our empty nest on Cape Cod which we share with our adorable Brittany, Sylvie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two words for Leslie Meier: Keep writing!, August 30, 2000
Trick or Treat Murder is my favorite Lucy Stone mystery because of the coziness of Ticker's Cove and the real-life characters. I enjoyed this novel so much I purchased all the other Lucy Stone mysteries to say that I have a collection of good books. Because it's hard to find authors that I enjoy so much, I can say Leslie Meier is one of them. Readers who are scanning bookshelves in their hometown, pick up a copy of Leslie Meier's Lucy Stone mysteries. You will not be sorry. Trust me. Congratulations to Leslie Meier for her brilliant, authentic writing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming, light reading., October 19, 2000
This was my first Lucy Stone mystery and I found it very enjoyable. I really liked the realistic, comfortable way in which Meier introduced Lucy's home life and contrasted it with the wild antics of her mystery-solving. The supporting characters are varied and very vividly drawn. The novel also uses touches of humor to keep things from getting too dark or scary. I plan to read more of Meier's books. I hope she continues this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY THE BEST HALLOWEEN MYSTERY, October 1, 2006
This book is an entertaining mystery. A crazy arsonist is detroying historical buildings. An innocent person dies in one of the houses. We have to find out who is doing it and why they are doing it.

I loved the Halloween setting that this book had. I enjoyed the pumpkin patch, the pumpkin carving, the orange cupcakes, the kids' costumes, the Halloween party, and the kids having Halloween fun.

I LOVED the family. The family was so cozy and warm. I loved the parents: Bill and Lucy; and also the children: Toby, Elizabeth, Sara, and Zoe. I loved the fact that Lucy had a newborn baby that she was nursing. I also loved her relationship with her other children and with her husband. She was a stay-at-home mom and wife and I absolutely loved her.

If you like mysteries, a Halloween setting, and a cozy old-fashioned family, then this book is for you.

This is the first book of this series that I have read. I will definitely come back for more. I want to visit this family again.
