Trick My Truck will delight,
By Judy "book reader" (Cincinnati, ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trick My Truck But Don't Mess With My Heart (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
Candie Montgomery puts her fast paced life in Chicago on hold to help her family is small town Pinewood, Ky. Candie's dads heart attack has put the family's used car business in jeopardy. Her first few minutes in town are confusing, why is no one waving back at her? She is shocked to find out that the is the other woman in her twin sisters failed engagement. More shocking is Candie has been out of town for two years. So what is up she wonders.
Candie decides she needs a boyfriend ASAP. Tommy Tucker offers to help out. Candie thought it would be simple having a pretend boyfriend. But one pretend kiss changes all of that for her. Added to this hometown mix is Candie and her Twin Sarah trying to revive the family business by having Sarah's ex fiance tricking out some trucks. Trick My Truck is an endearing light hearted romance. The characters are hot and spicy and feel like long lost friends. Candie's romance with Tommy will steam up your cold winter nights. The secondary romance of Sarah and Nick is explosive as well as endearing. I laughed out loud so many times during this book. It was a joy to read from the first page. Looking forward to the next book by this author.

I wound never have read anything like this, but sure am glad I did. Now my co-workers want to read it. Ths is the first book by this author I have read, but not for long! It is definity worth adding to your own bookshelf!

Lighthearted comedic fun,
By Laurie D (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trick My Truck But Don't Mess With My Heart (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
When Candie Montgomery returns home to Kentucky in an attempt to save her family's floundering used car business during her father's medical crisis, she is met by cold shoulders everywhere she goes in her small hometown. Turns out that everyone blames her for the earlier broken engagement of her twin sister, Sarah. Although she can't comprehend just how this misunderstanding came to be, she decides that she needs a "pretend" boyfriend to fool the townspeople and take the chill off; the luscious Tommy Tucker is quick to volunteer for the job. Candie is thrilled to have his help, but when his pretend kisses get progressively more intense, she begins to wonder who is actually being fooled. Tommy makes her feel beautiful and sexy, not the norm for Candie who has always felt that Sarah was the more beautiful twin.
Candie and Tommy are incredibly fun characters. The sisterly relationship of Candie and Sarah is especially sweet and realistically written, with each having her own insecurities and vulnerabilities. Secondary characters are a charming addition and Sarah's romance is a nice bonus. LuAnn McLane has proven that she is capable of first person writing, and this book is no exception. Candie's thoughts and actions are experienced by readers first-hand and make this story come to life and shine.

Quick read but very frustrating,
By Tide Reader (Caledonia, MS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trick My Truck But Don't Mess With My Heart (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
This is the first novel I've read by McLane, and I'm hoping it's not her best. Her characters have no sense of individuality or self-confidence. They also constantly apoligize for their actions and/or words which gets very annoying.
One thing that really frustrated me was the use of "doggone" in the book. How many times can an author overuse an adjective before the reader wants to send said author a thesaurus? I think this is her way of adding a "southern" taste to her story. Having been born and raised in the Deep South I can tell you almost nobody uses the word doggone, and certainly not in every other sentence! Please, use a little imagination and creativity and find another adjective! The story-line itself wasn't so bad, and if you can overlook the aforementioned issues it makes for an okay read.

DISAPPOINTING....,

I just couldn't get into this book. The characters were just too folksy and over the top and I was bored with the story. In Dark Roots and Cowboy Boots, the characters seemed more real without overdoing the small town "aw schucks" stuff. I would give it less than a one if I could.

amusing lighthearted small town romance,
This review is from: Trick My Truck But Don't Mess With My Heart (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
Candie Montgomery enjoyed her life in Chicago, but after two years there, she has come home to Pinewood, Kentucky to help save her family owned business, Dapper Dan Used Car Emporium. However, instead of a warm welcoming, she is treated like a pariah. People she has known since she was a child spurn her greetings; 876 accusers including family members. Candie is stunned to learn that everyone, even her twin sister blames her for her sibling's broken heart although she cannot understand how she can be held culpable for hot shot auto repair shop owner Nick ending it with Sarah.
She learns that everyone believes she is the other woman, who left town because her feelings for Nick drove her to Chicago. Candie informs her sister that when Sarah started to date her best friend Nick, she knew her twin and her buddy were meant for one another. Fearing for her family's business as sales has plummeted, she decides she must find a way to get Sarah's engagement unbroken, but not sure how as she is the athletic book worm not the glamour queen like her sibling is. Gorgeous Tommy Tucker offers her a perfect solution as he says he will pretend to be her boyfriend so that no one can accept her as Nick's woman. Reluctantly she agrees. As she falls in love, she waits for Tommy to mess up her heart when he says no more pretending. TRICK MY TRUCK BUT DON'T MESS WITH MY HEART is an amusing lighthearted small town romance in which the relationship between the twins is the star attraction over the two romances. The story line is fast-paced as the siblings land in one mess after another while Tommy tries to convince Candie that he is sweet on her and Sarah shows genius for the first time with her "Tricked out truck" ploy to re-nab Nick. Fans will enjoy the Montgomery sisters' antics in their old Kentucky home. Harriet Klausner

OK but not nearly as good and funny as every other book of hers I've read,
By Book Sponge (FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trick My Truck But Don't Mess With My Heart (Signet Eclipse) (Paperback)
I thought this book would be fun and hilarious like all her other books, but I have to say I was honestly disappointed. I was annoyed by how the 2 main females in the book, Candie and Sarah, had no independence or confidence. The character Tommy also annoyed me slightly with his lack of confidence. They did have some humor but not nearly as much as other characters in Mclane's books. The teaser at the end about Luke and Macy's story coming out in July was the best part of the book! I really hate to be harsh but I was dissatisfied with this book so I gave it 2 stars.

Candie returns to her hometown of Pinewood, Kentucky to help her twin sister, Sarah, run the family's used car business, following their father's heart attack. Sarah has recently broken off her engagement to her longtime love, Nick. Even though Candie has been living the past several years in Chicago, everyone in town blames her for the breakup, but no one will tell her why or what she did to cause the breakup. To make things easier on Candie, Sarah suggests Candie find a boyfriend.
Pinewood has a new Recreation Director at the local park. His name is Tommy Tucker and he is sexy. Tommy and Candie hit it off. Will Pinewood let Candie back in the fold or will Tommy not be enough damage control? Can Sarah and Nick's relationship be saved? Trick My Truck But Don't Mess With My Heart is a light, enjoyable evening escape. Ms. McLane writes of small town life and the effects of everyone knowing everyone else's business. The reader takes pleasure in knowing how the book ends but the ride is well worth the time of indulging. I have not yet read a book by Ms. McLane that did not leave a smile on my face and a lightness in my heart. Emma Reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

Candie Montgomery has returned home to Pinewood, Kentucky. Pinewood is so small that everyone knows everyone else as well as their business. So when news that Candie's sister, Sarah and her finance, Nick have broken up, because Candie ends up being the other woman; everyone in town starts shunning her.
Candie is so chocked that she would ever be the other women, especially to her own sister. Besides it's a little hard to break up anyone when Candie has been living in Chicago for the past two years. Nick and Candie are really close friends. Candie has thought about Nick as someone other then just a friend. Candie has to find a way to put the rumors to rest...fast. Candie comes up with the idea to have someone play her boyfriend but whom and where is she going to find someone willing to play the part? Tommy Tucker is the town's heartbreaker. Tommy is easy on the eyes but has the reputation of being a player. When Tommy hears that Candie needs someone to play her boyfriend, he agrees. Candie now has a boyfriend but is it Nick her heart desires? Oh my gosh, Candie and her sister Sarah are so funny. The adventures they get themselves into are priceless but than you throw in the antics and comments they make and you have pure magic. Candie just goes to show you that you can take the girl out of the county but you can't get the county out of the girl. I love the fact that the male leads always represent a hunky, male county singer. This time it was Keith Urban in the form of Tommy Tucker. Also another thing I love about these books is the titles like...Trick My Truck but Don't Mess with My Heart or A Little Less Talk and A Lot More Action. Southern comedies are Luann McLane's specialty. She serves her books up just right with a plate of humor, romance and a good old time. |
