The young boy's eyes were as big as saucers as he stood at center stage, and you could almost hear his knees knocking together as he waited for the count to begin. He had never been a magician's assistant before, and now it seemed he never would be again, as he found himself with ropes tied around his neck. Oh, why did he ever volunteer? He thought it would be fun! But now he was tied between two boys who had that gleam in their eyes that seemed to say, "Just wait 'til we pull these ropes through your helpless, tiny, little neck!" The count was about to begin and he was trapped! Trapped like an animal, like a prisoner. Now the magician was talking about how people get trapped by sin! Oh, yes, of course. He was trying to teach a lesson. The magician asked the young boy, "Will you trust me?" Without thinking the child had answered, "Yes!" Why, oh why? What did the magician say? Um, keep standing firm? Have faith? Maybe he could run. No, that would mean he was a sissy... certainly not an option for an eight-year-old. ONE, TWO, THREE! Oh my, the end was at hand. The boys pulled with all their might. The ropes tightened and seemed to pass right through his neck! The audience was applauding and everything was indeed all right, just as the magician said it would be. Wow! What a story! What a lesson! Jesus could set a person free. Free from sin! A person who should be dead could live as a Christian. And whatever became of the little boy? Well, it was a Sunday school lesson I will never forget! --Douglas L. Wathen, author
