Awesome album!,
By Chris Ochman "The Eclectic Listener" (Fredericksburg, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trickster (Audio CD)
This album is one of my favorites, even though compared to their next release, this one seems a bit more laid back, whereas in Zeropsace, they simply go all out in their songs.
Ones to listen to are Taxicab Messiah, Creature and Pleasant. I don't own this release, but I do own the Trickster Reprocess, which is available off of their website, which includes remastered versions of all these songs on this album, plus 2 extra songs I believe, Veteran and Red & Violet. Not an album to miss out on, if you like KT!

New Age Classic!,
By Rachel (Spokane, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trickster (Audio CD)
This album should be in every new age music collection. From the cynical message in "Taxicab Messiah", to the deranged commentary on "S+M" and even the oddity of "Feathers", Trickster is pure and proud trip-hop expressed with guitars and lyrics that could almost be sprites the way they jump out and come to life within the music. Free's vocals are harmonic and the lyrics are very well written...Like I said before...you love Trip-hop, then get this auditive extravaganza...buy your copy of Trickster and see for yourself...You also might like to check into Zerospace or perhaps other bands like Tapping the Vein and Collide...or Jack of Jill...The goth-rock genre has so much to offer! Peace out! ~Rockette

Amazing Ambience and Feeling,
By Keegan van der Laag (Calgary AB, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trickster (Audio CD)
A very moving CD, full of some of the most downright awe-inspiring soundscapes I've ever heard. Unlike nearly every other band, the vocals, done by Free Dominguez, are not so much laid on TOP of the music, per se, but fully integrated into the intricate mesh that makes up the music. This CD is DEFINITELY worth the money, and if you like this, check out Zerospace too, and look into the Live in Chicago 2002 CD...

When I first listened to the Kidneythieves' Zerospace CD I was enthralled, I loved every aspect of it. So naturally when I was given the opportunity to get their debut CD, Trickster, I jumped at the chance thinking it would be even more emotional and intense. What I was greeted with upon first listen was a much more industrial feel, very reminiscent of a Nine Inch Nails record, and Free Dominguez's voice has so much more passion in it (if that's even possible). For my money, this is one of the best debuts I've heard in years.
If there's one reason I like Trickster better than Zerospace I'd say that I just like the entire experience more. Take Pretty, that is one of the most powerful songs I've heard in a long time and it's not even that heavy. What makes Pretty so powerful is the lyrics and the delivery of the lyrics, Free definitely proves her worth on that track. Or take the instrumentation on Feathers, it's incredible. I like how the songs are presented on Zerospace, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that Trickster is way better. As a whole the CD feels and sounds complete. There's not one certain song that drags, they all have a pretty consistent pace throughout. In fact, every song, to me, is nearly flawless. There are parts of songs that could be a bit better, but it's nothing so bad that it's unlistenable, or even noticeable really. My favorite songs are Feathers, Creature, K, Pretty, Pleasant. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a CD as much as I do Trickster. I mean the lyrics are amazing, the instrumentation is perfect, the vocals are delicate yet so intense, basically vocals only Free Dominguez could portray. I wouldn't suggest anyone look over this band or CD, if you're a fan of rock, this is for you. There are two wonderful tracks that aren't included in this version though, only on the Trickstereprocess available through their website, so I'd definitely recommend getting that version instead.

Tricksterreprocessed!,
By Silent Strike "Eric" (Jeffersonville, IN, USA) - See all my reviews

I heard about Kidneythieves when I was playing an awesome PC game called Deus Ex: Invisible War. I was told there were six songs in the game from the album Tricksterreprocess and after hearing the songs, I went online to their site and bought the album. I did some more research and found out that reprocess is the digitally remastered version of Trickster, plus reprocess contains two new songs and a bonus DVD. But since Tricksterreprocess is only available at the KT website, I thought I'd post my review of it underneath the Trickster album. I plan on getting every KT album that's on here! Every track stands out in its own way, plus within the crowds of NIN and such, Kidneythieves stand out on their own. They need their own crowd for their type of music!
Does anyone know if they're still around? I just recently went to their site and found out that the latest update from them since was late 2004. Please e-mail me at XNAILSTORMX@aol.com with the subject "KT Status." KT Forever!

where it began...,

kidneythieves first album, sadly now out of print, is deffinetly a superbly well created one. jouncing through slow melodic moments, numerous moments of pounding industrial, and even some rather catchy techno backgrounds provide this bands ability to really move about the space within their style, pushing it against all it's borders. free provides some of the most stunning female vocals to be heard in the industrial scene, often she is compairable if not topping of such noteworthies as Jack Off Jill, Sneaker Pimps ( first album; becoming x ) and Portishead. Some tracks to highlight would be Feathers, which opens with a rather cool and sultury style and drifts into a pounding bridge, Taxicab Messiah, th eopening track, offers us a view of a cab driver one might not expect.. and lastly for me to list is Pleasant, a track that incorporates a heavier angle on the techno edge then others, and opens with a rather unique twist on her singing.if it's available, i advise buying this little piece and taking good care, it's not just collectible, but you'll find it in your player constantly!

Im Glad I gambled on ths band. If you like your industrial music well defined, hard/funky and melodic all on one CD. Check this out. The female singer is remarkable. The band is as well. A quality production in the vast sea of industrial music. Try it, it's Excellent.

Ever since my friend Tak introduced me to the kidneythieves, I've been hooked ever since. Not only is it amazing industrial rock, you have a female vocalist, also! Can it get much better? This is one catchy CD. Songs like 'Taxicab Messiah' and 'S+M [A Love Song]' are upbeat and something you can headbang to, while songs like 'Feathers' and 'Mustard Seed' can really mellow out your day. The strong vocals and the rhythms are the key to all of this, in my opinion. I absolutely love the way Free sings. I'm hooked, that's all I can say. If you're looking for a band with an awesome female lead, this is my choice, I'll say that now... |
