A little confused by the 18+ rating,
By Josie Cross "Jess" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tricky Prince (Yaoi) (Yaoi Manga) (Paperback)
I was a little confused by the 18+ rating. Usually it has an 18+ rating if there are graphic pictures (usually sexual in nature). However, I don't this even had a sex scene in it so I was a bit befuddled. However there is a part where a big ole grizzly (extremely hairy) teacher gets down and ready to get dirty with one of the characters, while he (the grizzly) is pretending to be a 14 year old girl who wants to be ravished....but - still - I think that could of tested a 13+ rating - maybe a 16+ at the most. Either way, even if I think this one probably should of been a 16+, it was still kind of cute. Not to much of a developmental relationship, more of a, you are this now and that's how it is kind of thing. Would of loved to seen more and more relationship development. Maybe more romantic? lol. This is one of those where one wants a partnership and the other one definitely doesn't (although gives in every now and then). So if you like that type then definitely get it. But I do say, the coverwork and a few of the chapter cover art work pages are very good. Playing on a s&m or BDSM kind of feel (although believe me there really isn't any of that in the book) it's much more "symbolic" meaning than literal. Although I probably wouldn't of minded to see some of it be literal lol. Still, the art was good and some parts were funny. I give it a 2.5 out of 5. Kudos.

This may very well be a cute and enjoyable story but I wouldn't know. The version appears to consist of hastily scanned pages from a paperback copy which results low quality pages with text so tiny it's impossible to read. This was my first time trying to purchase manga in an electronic format. I have to say, I'm extremely disappointed and not likely to buy this kind of product in future... at least until I can be assured that these publishers or distributors will raise their standards a little bit and stop thinking it's perfectly okay to make people pay for such a substandard product. They can do better. A twelve year old with a laptop and scanner could do better.

A silly, enjoyable 'odd couple',

Impoverished (yet gifted) peasant Eugene is interested only in his studies.Apparently handsome young princes really dig nerdy young men who continually rebuff their advances. Or perhaps it's just the crazy ones? And so we meet the other lover in this novel, Prince Willis. He pursues (i.e. stalks) Eugene and plays with the boy much like a cat batting around a favorite stuffed mouse. This is not your typical Yaoi romance, as the romance aspect is flimsy, but do not let that deter you. The draw in this manga is the wonderful interaction between Eugene (a comic straight man if ever there was) and crazy-trickster Willis (a comic if ever there was). The prince is an interesting character, a pretty blond man who utters inanities with a completely straight face. And Eugene, instead of running screaming from the crazy, responds with a dry rejoinder every time. It's a blast to read. Does this romance make a lot of sense? No. Is it a lot of fun? Yes! The artwork is pleasing, but of a style that may be distracting as the lines are very flowy and light, not clean and with clear definition. Additionally, there is not very much actual Yaoi here, the sexuality stems from suggestions and allusions from the prince, which add to the fun.

I loved this! Prince Willis' antics are just outrageous and hilarious. He is the epitome of the cool guy who seems to have luck on his side. Any scheming against him either backfires or falls flat. Eugene is the studious scholar whose only concern is keeping his grades up so his scholarship won't be reversed. He cares nothing about royalty and social climbing which endears him to Prince Willis.

I bought this manga out of a whim (mostly because I like stories about uke's that wear glasses : p )and I am so glad I did! This yaoi manga is worth every cent I paid for it!The interaction between the prince and the uke is always very FUNNY. It's a shame they did not make a sequal for this; I would've liked to see more than just kissing between the two main characters because even though Eugene (the uke) says he doen't like the Prince, there's an unspoken attraction between them, which makes me want a SECOND VOLUME. This yaoi manga is worth having on any yaoi fan shelf, I guarantee it! It gets funnier each time I read it!

delightful, with a dash of kink,

the dialog was fresh and interesting (and often times, unexpected!), the pacing was fantastic, the art was beautiful, and the character interaction was incredibly fun. :)this is one of the few manga that got me to LOL. and it was blush-worthy at the same time! i prize works that can accomplish this. (check out "Take me to Heaven" as well for that sort of thing. don't let it's froofy cover put you off, the tone of the manga is not reflected in that. the art style is more occult/horror and the ghosts are not done in a cartoony silly way at all.) my only gripe would be that it ends in one volume. i would have loved there to be more to read on this, but then again i would hate if it dragged by being overextended. as it was, the volume was wrapped up well, though you could see where the story *could* continue. p.s. the XXX was hot xD very well done, and certainly not boring like it is in so many yaoi mangas. you can tell the mangaka took her time with this one. advice: buy it. |
