5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing educational resource!
As a video teacher who works with young people, I find Tricky Video to be an AMAZING educational resource. And it's a lot of fun! My students love working on projects from the book. It combines classic camera tricks with innovative new ones, and is very accessible. Also, the exercises from a strong basis for experimentation and creativity--my students often come up...

3.0 out of 5 stars tricks of the trade
Pretty much everything in Klutz's Tricky Videos is stuff we did back in the day, but in super-8 film. In-camera edits and forced (or false) perspectives and clever editing tricks - yup, old school. But then, everything old is new again, as always.

It sure would have been a lot easier to have had this book though, and some of the technology to go with it...

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent gift and source of ideas for budding young directors, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Tricky Video: The Complete Guide to Making Movie Magic (Klutz) (Hardcover-spiral)
Tricky Video: The Complete Guide to Making Movie Magic is an exciting, easy-to-understand compendium of twenty-three tips and tricks young adults can use to create seemingly magical illusions on a home video camera, whether for home videos, YouTube posts, school projects, or anything else. Full color photography illustrate clever ideas from action figure dances (filmed via stop-motion animation) to "snap power" (when a subject on film snaps his fingers, his sister appears to turn into a dog!) to "giant land" (a tiny person stands on top of a giant's head). None of the optical illusions require an excess of expensive equipment beyond an ordinary home video camera - not even movie editing software. A black-and-white, Hollywood-style slate is included in this excellent gift and source of ideas for budding young directors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for teachers!, October 25, 2009
This review is from: Tricky Video: The Complete Guide to Making Movie Magic (Klutz) (Hardcover-spiral)
I taught at a special effects and digital video summer camp. Tricky Video was an invaluable resource for students of all ages. It helped me as an instructor show the students the possibilities of video without complex special effects, masks or animation. It is an entertaining resource will loads of fun exercises that explore spatial and temporal tricks for tweaking video. I highly recommend it for students and educators that want a cost-effective, easy and fun way to manipulate video!

Bought this for my nephew for Christmas knowing he was receiving a Flip camcorder. He loves it I think even more than the camcorder! He enjoys running around and snapping the top saying 'take one' and 'take two' etc... The book looks to have fun tips for filming as well but he may not read that until he is a little older. Right now he just likes filming goofy stuff and snapping this thing! Worth the price for certain.

5.0 out of 5 stars I bough it for the clapper/slate and price, August 31, 2011
This review is from: Tricky Video: The Complete Guide to Making Movie Magic (Klutz) (Hardcover-spiral)
Most of the things here are based on stop motion and other cheesy video tricks, but it WORKS! The reason why I bough this was because it comes with a clapper/slate which is useful. Just paste a whiteboard like material and now you have your own customized slate! HA!

This was a gift for an 8 year-old girl who also received a new video/still camera. She's read the whole thing. I hope she will try some of the tricks out with her camera.
