I usually don't write reviews because, being completely honest here, I'm lazy. Very lazy. I'm sure a lot of you can attest to that so I am EXTREMELY sincere sitting here typing this up when I could be playing my PS4 instead but that can wait. This is worth talking about.

The Trident Cyclops series case for the Droid Maxx XT1080 is, without a shadow of a doubt the most awesome phone case I've ever owned. I have gone through 2 different screen protectors and 1 case and this blows it all out of the water. I bought a Skinomi screen protector along with the Diztronic Matte Back Flexible TPU Case and I wasn't pleased with either at all. I had a Droid Razr Maxx with the Otterbox along with a Skinomi protector and I loved the combination but when I got the Skinomi for my Maxx it kept peeling up from the side of the screen and within a week it was useless. I emailed them about it and they sent me one of their newer ones called "Illumishield" for free. The Illumishied doesn't require the spray to apply it which I do find convenient and potentially less harmful to the phone. Unfortunately it too just kept peeling up from the sides rendering it useless.

I realized that on both the Skinomi and the Illumishield the edge of the protector was just far enough out on both sides that it was going over the "curve" of the screen. On the Maxx if you look real closely you'll notice a slight curve downwards all the way around the screen. This caused a "lip" to form underneath the edge of the protectors making them catchable by your fingernails, while in your pocket, when you put a case on it, and so on. This is where the Diztronic case somes in.

After much deliberation on how to protect only my 2nd smartphone of all time (my first being a Droid Bionic), I settled on the hard-core protection of the Trident Cyclops. This review is based on my impressions of it after 2 weeks of use. First, the pros and cons and then I'll give you some additional thoughts.

PROS
* Rigid plastic case provides great protection against bumps and drops.
* Super easy to install.
* Has "grippy" sides, making it easier to hold onto.
* Ports are protected by fold-out rubber flaps.

CONS
* Adds noticeable bulk and weight to the phone.
* Built-in screen protector - although convenient - is not as responsive as I'd like.
* Cut-outs in screen protector (for camera, speaker, etc.) allow dust and other particles to enter, which then get trapped between your phone's screen and the built-in screen protector. The only way to remove them is to remove the case and clean everything out.
* Case is somewhat difficult to remove.
* Port protection flaps are fairly stiff and will push back against an inserted charging plug or headphone plug.
* Noise cancellation ports have no cutouts in the case, so they are covered and rendered essentially useless.
* Back is slightly curved towards the top and bottom edges, so that when you lay it on a flat surface and touch the navigation icons, the phone "rocks" making it difficult to use on flat surfaces.
* There is a rubberized logo section in the center of the back which makes the phone less likely to slide around while on its back, there are no such rubberized section on the front bezel, making the phone prone to sliding around if placed face-down.

The first case I picked up for my Droid Maxx did not give me the confidence that my phone would survive a fall from waist height (I'm 6 feet tall). So after shopping around and reading many reviews, this Trident case seemed my best bet when compared to the price of an Otter Box. My absolute favorite cases are made by Ballistic, I had one for my Droid X2 which survived at least 5 significant drops just fine. But alas, Ballistic is not making a case for the Droid Maxx. Trident seemed to be producing a case just as capable however, and I can say that it feels like it offers near, if not the same protection as my trusty Ballistic case.

The one drawback is that this Trident case comes equipped with a built in screen protector. I'm wasn't very big on this style of screen protection, preferring to adhere a Steinheil Ultra Crystal LCD protection film when possible. Now, after using this Trident case for just 12 days, I can say for sure that I do not like the built on screen protector that lays over the screen. I have had a lot of grit, dust and whatnot getting in through the camera and speaker cutouts in the screen protector which is not only unsightly but is also potentially aiding in possibility of scratches to my screen.

Being a solid case, I am seriously considering cutting out the screen protector with an Exacto knife and applying a Steinheil SGP Ultra Crystal film - if they make one for this model. Why wouldn't anyone make covers and gear for the Droid Maxx? It is an awesome smart phone! The battery life alone makes it top notch for me. Anyways, any adhering screen protection film will do better than the film Trident affixed to it's hard shell.

One last thing.
