Book Description

October 1, 2009
A Farmer is found dead in the middle of winter. Strangled in his bed. When a neighboring farmer comes upon the scene the following day, he is left with no choice but to notify the sheriff. The sheriff wastes no time taking the farmer's wife, Minnie, into custody after hearing her claim to have been sleeping soundly when the tragic event occurred. As the neighbor retells his story to the sheriff and county attorney; their wives, who are there to collect personal property for Minnie, begin to form there own conclusions. And will their discoveries and growing sympathy for an isolated farmer's wife cause them to suppress vital and condemning evidence? Trifles is a timeless classic. Based on the true story of a murder that Susan Glaspell covered for a Des Moines newspaper in 1900.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleuthing.... between the men and the women., October 28, 2009
By
This review is from: Trifles (Paperback)
Most likely, Trifles is one of the most popular plays for education in literature drama. It features several elements that make up an engaging one-act play. It is mysterious, a farmer has been murdered, suspense throughout the play, characterization well defined, moral conflict, and most of all, we get a man versus woman thing going on. Women, regardless of the situation, have a sense of compassion for one another which differs what men think, in a sexist manner. The time is the early 1900s, and the setting is a farmhouse in the cold of the rural middle West with five characters.

A Sheriff, County Attorney, and neighbor have arrived at the abandoned home of James Wright, who was found strangled in bed as he slept near his wife, the accused. The sheriff's wife, Mrs. Peters and the neighbor's wife, Mrs. Hale, have come along to the farmhouse. It is here that the women in a casual, nonconforming method start analyzing the farmhouse, the accused, the lifestyle, etc. The men, on the other hand, don't take much to the women sleuthing around, as it is their job. In other words, they don't take it serious.

Trifles is Susan Glaspell's most popular play. She was born in 1882 and died in 1948 and the story is based on an experience in her life as a journalist. Glaspell wrote a fully length drama Alison's House A Play in Three Acts. For that, she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1931. .....Rizzo
