5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional!
So here's my story. I did the Honors Mathematics sequence in high school. I had 102% as my final overall grade in Honors Algebra 2; I got the highest grades in all of my math classes from elementary school to AP Calculus AB (I had major 'senioritis' and quit the class before the B/C part, because of the large amounts of homework).

I didn't take a single math...

2.0 out of 5 stars Made me angry
You know, what made me mad about this book was that the author comes up with problems in the book but he never shows you how to solve them. To learn how to solve, I had to go on the Internet. Why did I need this book. And he keeps doing it throughout the book. When you have lots of homework to do, and if you're taking 5-6 classes in semester, you don't have time to be...

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional!, February 6, 2012
So here's my story. I did the Honors Mathematics sequence in high school. I had 102% as my final overall grade in Honors Algebra 2; I got the highest grades in all of my math classes from elementary school to AP Calculus AB (I had major 'senioritis' and quit the class before the B/C part, because of the large amounts of homework).

I didn't take a single math class for FOUR years. None. I decided to go back to school, and I scored so high on the math section of my placement test that I placed into Calculus with Analytic Geometry 1.

Now, four years without math is a long time. Remembering algebra essentials is one thing, but remembering trigonometry is a different story. Even though I have a teachers edition of a college algebra book, this book was comprehensive enough to tone the most essential parts of algebra required for calculus, and it is very well written.

Some math books do nothing but but explain math with math. This book provides the rigor one would expect from a math book, while explaining things well enough that careful reading and working through examples is adequate enough to cover the more complicated sections.

I wouldn't say the book is "concise" like the "Complete Idiot's Guide" books, but compared to a full Algebra with Trigonometry book, it is pretty short. It will prepare one for calculus without a doubt. There's explanations on how to do things with and without a calculator, hundreds of problems per chapter, and plenty of Algebra work that goes along with trigonometry. The chapter "P" also covers a lot of things a College Algebra book should, such as functions, inverse functions, graphs, graph transformations, and linear equations.

There is also a nice formula sheet in the front and the back of the book to refer to. It's comprehensive, readable, full of applications, and it has an appropriate amount of mathematical rigor.

Lastly, I should mention that I use Larson's Calculus 9th Edition for my Calculus class. It's a great book too. Larson writes some of the best math books out there. I would definitely give this a shot. It has "pre-calculus" written all over it (not literally of course).

2.0 out of 5 stars Made me angry, January 27, 2012
You know, what made me mad about this book was that the author comes up with problems in the book but he never shows you how to solve them. To learn how to solve, I had to go on the Internet. Why did I need this book. And he keeps doing it throughout the book. When you have lots of homework to do, and if you're taking 5-6 classes in semester, you don't have time to be running around on the Internet looking for methods on how to solve particular problem because the author does not provide one. You need a book that shows you how to solve a problem, and then gives you similar problems so that you can practice and learn. There are no bad students. There are bad teachers. This book sucks. Agrh!

2.0 out of 5 stars Support Ipad, PC and Mac ONLY!, January 26, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Trigonometry (Kindle Edition)
I take Trigonometry course and my instructor required this book. It's alway cheaper by renting an kindle version of the book than buying a real one and then sell it back. The reason why I give this 2 out of 5 because it ONLY supports Ipad, Mac and PC, which means the student who have an android tablet and Kindle Fire like me cannot access it in class; or I have to bring my old model laptop, double heavier and easy run out of the battery, to class, just in order to use the book. And i'm sure that I'm not gonna do that cuz I ride a bike, not a car.
P/s: If it lets me use thru my android tablet, I'll give it 4 stars: I buy this book cuz my instructor often picks some problems to solve to practice. It's really weird when everybody working and you do nothing. I know almost the material before the course so the content is not a big deal for me. Just piss off cuz exclusive Ipad is ridiculous!

3.0 out of 5 stars somewhat overpriced, June 15, 2008
This review is from: Trigonometry (Hardcover)
Trigonometry hasn't changed in centuries. I compare this book with those I had as a student in high school. It does have far more colourful material. The visuals here are spectacular if set against the plain black and white of my texts. But those were from the 70s. The book also has many worked out examples and scads of exercises.

However, if you need many exercises to work through, this old fashioned offering from Schaum's has those, at a far cheaper price, Schaum's Outline of Trigonometry.

The apparently innovative stuff of the new book is its Eduspace website. Where the reader can go to get more material. The publisher and authors seem to have put a lot of effort here. Maybe this gets you value for $130. Or maybe not.

I was very surprised that the book I ordered was in such good shape and in hardback(thoughgt it would be in paperback). I saved about $112 buying it from Amazon!!
