Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

In "Escape from Pain," Vash and his friends bid an appropriately offbeat farewell to the gun-and-cross toting preacher Nicholas D. Wolfwood, as the two antiheroes help a young couple escape to freedom. Vash's past comes back to haunt him in the linked episodes "Diablo" and "Vash the Stampede," when Legato Bluesummers and the gargantuan Monev the Gale try to murder him. Vash escapes with his usual élan, but refuses to kill his would-be assassin. The ace marksman's behavior puzzles investigators Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson. They discover further hints about who Vash is (or was) when they see him without a shirt: his upper body is a mass of hideous scars. And the viewer has seen the intriguing Rem, the long-haired girl who appears only in Vash's memories. Meryl tries to decipher this charismatic and frustrating character in a report to the Bernardelli Insurance Society, which triggers a series of flashbacks from previous episodes. The outrageous man with the long blond crewcut is clearly the outlaw known as "The Humanoid Typhoon," but what does that mean? Director Satoshi Nishimura and writer Yosuke Kuroda aren't ready to tip their hands yet, and Vash remains the enigma he's always been.

Rated for ages 13 and up for violence and mild profanity. --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD, September 20, 2000

This review is from: Trigun Vol. 4 - Gung-Ho Guns (DVD)
I kinda liked the first trigun disc, thought some may not have. I enjoyed the second one more than the first, and some of those who didnt like the first would jump on the band wagon. I loved the third disc with the introduction of Wolfwood, and by the time you see the third disc you would have to like it. But then I ordered the fourth disc [from] suncoast and got it ten days in advance and was so amazed at the episodes. The last episode on the disc is mostly a through away which just reviews the previous episodes from 1 and up. But the first two are the best episodes i have seen so far. And they finally introduce some worthwhile villans like legato bluesummers. Legato is in it momentarilly but you can see a future for him he just comes off as EVIL. If you see this one you are gonna want to buy them all. The series just gets better with ever release. Trigun is one of the best animes i have seen in a while. It's true It's True, This is right up there near the top of the list of the best anime series of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The series takes a surprising turn..., December 11, 2000

Or maybe not-so-surprising. I mean, I knew there was SOMETHING dark lurking around; Vash's trippy dream sequences about Rem are proof enough of that. The fact that episode 12 was almost completely serious (except for the priceless dodgeball scene and Milly's cryptic reference to muffins) didn't totally throw me; still, I was amazed at just HOW serious it could be. Death, destruction, a completely frightening villain with a penchant for hotdogs and a sexy voice (I love Seki Toshihiko)... and Vash getting Really Really [upset]. Wow. The first episode on this tape is also good (it features Wolfwood and pudding - did that come out wrong?) and the last is one of the most worthwhile recap episodes I've ever seen, not only because we get to see Vash shirtless, but because it actually brings up little things that happened in earlier episodes which I'd completely forgotten about. Still, episode 12, aptly titled "Diablo", is reason enough for purchasing this volume. If you've written the series off as being just goofy slapstick, this one'll be sure to change your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oooh, Spooky!, February 20, 2001

This review is from: Trigun Vol. 4 - Gung-Ho Guns (DVD)
This DVD has one of the creepiest villains yet to come out of an anime. The first confrontation that Vash has with him is the most original I have seen yet. I don't want to ruin anything for you, but rather keep you in suspense. Vash is literally driven insane in this DVD and is much more serious than comedic for a change, which IS a good thing. It is sad to see Wolfwood depart from Vash at the end of the discs first episode, but something tells me that is not the last of him we will see. Anyway, definitely pick this up; you are in for quite an experience! DON'T MISS OUT!!
