ABSOLUTELY, A KNOCKOUT RARE GEM!!!, March 11, 2005
This review is from: Trill Azz Mixez (Audio CD)
Overall, I'm more of a hip hop fan; however, I'm from down south and whenever I come across excellent UGK material...well, Pimp C and Bun B make me feel proud to be "southern bred."
First things first: you'll be hard-pressed to find this rare diamond, and that's being nice about it! To be real about, you're probably not going to find this one anywhere (sorry to crush all of those dreams), although if you're Internet savvy, you may be able to stumble upon it from some underground rap vendors.
What is this album? Is it an unheard of UGK full length? Think of it like this: a DJ compiles thirteen of his/her favorite southern instrumentals, synchronizes UGK's vocals from some of their best songs to the music, and the DJ eternally blends the music till the album's end. "Trill Azz Mixes" is just that, a continuous blend of UGK's best fused with other southerner's best soundscapes (the album's title is a bit misleading, as there is no mixing or scratching, just blending). Like I said before, this album is not something put out by UGK, but by a (more than likely defunct) label called 'Port Arthur Entertainment,' with the music hosted by an anonymous DJ.
I give this 5 stars not because it's a classic like "Illmatic" or "Doggystyle," but because it's a continuous display of the south's best: the best of UGK's lyricism (e.g. "Stuck in da Game," "Front Back Side II Side," "Pocket Full of Stones," etc.) and the best of southern producer's work (including a few beats done by Pimp C himself). Unless you're from the 3rd Coast down here, you might not be able to fully appreciate this, but perhaps you might. I give this CD a very high recommendation - IF YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON THIS, DO SO!!!! PEACE!
