TEACHING EARTH SCIENCESThe great succession of kinds of trilobites evolved in a world of changing geography and climate. How trilobites were preserved, the kinds of rocks in which they occur, and traces of their activity, are described in order to infer where they lived in ancient seas and their manner of life. Changes in form and recurring trends are discussed; and the search for evolutionary links between kinds of trilobites, as the basis for a natural classification, is reviewed. Contents: Introduction; General character, terminology of exoskeleton, zoological names; Limbs; Anatomy and activity; Growth and moulting; Exoskeleton: form and function; Preservation and occurrence; Distribution in time, evolution and classification; Plates, classification of species figured, explanations of plates and text-figures. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic on Trilobites by the Grand Master of Paleontology, May 4, 2001
This review is from: Trilobites (Fossils Illustrated) (Hardcover)
Harry Whittington is acknowledged as one of the key workers in invertebrate paleontology, and his decades of work with trilobites and other invertebrates (he described the weird wonders of the Burgess Shales, such as Opabinia and Anomalocaris) reflects his passion for these primordial creatures. In this book, he presents a 1992 summary of what is known of their biology and diversity, and accompanies the text with a huge high resolution B&W photographic library of specimens that demonstrate the amazing range of variation that trilobites exhibit. This can be a difficult book to acquire. It took two years of searching through used book web sites before I was finally able to get a copy, and it is cherished for the foundation it provides on trilobite morphology, ontogeny, and classification (but the pictures are still the best part!) In short, if you are interested in trilobites, this book is a required part of your reference library. I understand that it has recently been reprinted, so I hope you are able to get your copy without the grueling 2 year wait!
