5.0 out of 5 stars no more comparisons to '93 til infinity.... please!
Souls of Mischief, along with Casual, was the first hip-hop I was exposed to. Over the last 8 years, the Hiero crew has had a roller-coaster journey of poorly produced (No Man's Land) and uncohesive (3rd Eye Vision) albums. Everyone seems to want another "No Need for Alarm," or "93 til Infinity," but I'm satisfied with Souls' latest album, as well as...

1.0 out of 5 stars Trilogy: Expectation, Realization, Frustration
This CD left a bad taste in my mouth.
Trying to judge this CD on it's own merit, without thinking about 93 'TIL INFINITY, is like watching EPISODE 1: THE PHANTOM MENACE without thinking of the first three STAR WARS movies. Or listening to THE LOVE MOVEMENT without thinking of the first three Tribe Called Quest albums.

Souls of Mischief, along with Casual, was the first hip-hop I was exposed to. Over the last 8 years, the Hiero crew has had a roller-coaster journey of poorly produced (No Man's Land) and uncohesive (3rd Eye Vision) albums. Everyone seems to want another "No Need for Alarm," or "93 til Infinity," but I'm satisfied with Souls' latest album, as well as the innovative "Deltron 3030." The production on this album is light years ahead of previous Souls' offerings. As usual, the rhymes are sick... it's nice to see some production up to par with the lyrical skill. A definate purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different flavor then what might be expected..., October 26, 2000
This review is from: Trilogy: Conflict Climax Resolution (Audio CD)
"Souls fell off, this is no 93 till infinity man!"

No it's not 93 til Infinity...

That was 7 years ago and SOM have matured a lot since then. Some fans might find this album to be a little bit on the "Thuggish" side.. (well at least for a SOM album) but it definatly has a smartness to it.

As for the songs...

Things get heated around track 3 with "Interrogation" featuring a nice appearnce by both Pep Love and Casual. A definate bumper.

The fast paced "Last Night" is one of my favorite tracks on the album. Again, it's a lot different then they're previous sounding stuff, but don't sleep on it just because it's not 93 till.

Mama Knows Best featuring Mystic and George Clinton is probably the most accesible track. Sweet melodic sounding Mystic delivers a nice chorus to compliment the flow of the track.

Sound Science with Evidence of Dialalted Peoples has a super-fresh beat and really compliments the later, more mellow sounding tracks near the end.

The last two tracks are pretty smooth and tie up the album nicely.

...

In my opinion, this is not an album where you should just pick out 3 or 4 tracks to listen to... you must listen to the whole album to get a general feel and appreciation for it.

I'd rank it just a bit behind 93 Til, but not by much.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Trilogy: Conflict Climax Resolution (Audio CD)
For those of you who are familiar with the Hiero-crew, it should come as no surprise that this is an excellent cd. However, for those of you who aren't let me give a brief run down of why this cd is so good. First and foremost their lyrics and abitlity to flow, which is what originally attracted listeners to SOM and other Hiero members, is still well intact. Second, the beats on this album are quite a step above their other two albums. Combining their excellent lyrics and flow with the premium quality beats present on this cd make for one of my all time favorite hip-hop cd's. Some people say that the lyrics are tuned more towards the gangsta side of things but that is only on several songs. Don't let that in anyway disuade you from purchasing this album. It will probably be one of the best cd purchases you've made in quite some time

4.0 out of 5 stars INTELLIGENT hiphop!, July 25, 2001
This review is from: Trilogy: Conflict Climax Resolution (Audio CD)
I did NOT like this LP at first but it grew on me! I loved 93 til infinity but did NOT like NO MAN'S LAND. This is different from both lps. At first, I didn't like the "thinner" beats and the Souls didn't grab me but after many more listens and time, I came to the conclusion that this is one DOPE intelligent album! It's very headstrong and has alot to it. "Mamma Knows Best" is great track and a good example of me hating it but then, growing to love it. Mystic sings the hook and she has this etherial, sexy and heavenly voice. The Souls go back and forth line for line like no other hiphop group. Their lyrics are intelligent but can also be playful at times. Sure, they do come hard and a little "thugged" out sometimes but for the most part, they are just trying to spread love and create some dope hiphop! They do it! My favorite tracks are "Interrogation" with Casual and Peplove (produced by Domino)..this is bangin! "Mamma Knows Best" f/Mystic and George Clinton, "Medication", "Soundscience" produced by Evidence of Dialated Peoples. I only wish DEL the funkie homosapian was on a track. Most of the production is handled by Souls (A-Plus and Opio) and Tommy Tee did 2 tracks. Give it a good couple of listens. IT's an intelligent hiphop LP that grew on me and now, I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars it's tight, December 28, 2000

This album is tight. I loved Third Eye Vision, and was waiting to catch some Oakland Blackouts with Conflict.... Souls are doing are great things with there rhymin skills and styles these days. Four highly talented and intelligent MCs bouncin rhymes of each other and people like Pep Love and Cas, you can't go wrong. This is hella tight no matter where you're at. You won't be dissappointed with this album.

Seven years after creating such an era-defining album, they come back with an album so full of thug and playa pandering attempts. Now even though they chased skins in their early work, this time it's accompanied by E-40/Too Short style production that does no fit them at all. For God's sake, there's even a track that sounds like Mannie Fresh hooked it up in a couple of minutes ("That Ain't Life"). Now aside from the weak attempts at Primo/Alchemist sample-chopping ("Danglin'") and the Evidence produced "Sound Science", the only song on the entire album that even remotely comes close to the 93 'TIL era is "Medication". And as tight as that song is, it's NOT worth your hard earned money.
When the Souls of Mischief came on the scene, they were considered an alternative to the O.G. thugged out hip-hop that was prevailant at the time. Now, with thugged out hip-hop at an all-time high, they sound no different from anyone else. And that is a slap in the face of a lot of Hiero fans that hung on for all those years.
There is a reason why they are your fans, guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's going on with some of yall, January 17, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Trilogy: Conflict Climax Resolution (Audio CD)
Ok. Some of yall said this lp left a bad taste in your mouth. Well this review'll give yall a bad taste in yours. If you can't recognize a sick ass album then yall need to find another genre. From hot lyrics to blazing beats, this has got it all. The Hiero crew fall off with their material until this.
My favorite tracks are Trilogy, Interrogation, Acupuncture, and Soundscience. Besides these there are some decent/nice tracks and few garbage tracks. I gave this a 5 cause of all the bad reviews.. Probably a 4 to 4.5. Grab this one.. If you're already here researching this, trust me, you'll love this Souls.

4.0 out of 5 stars "They Wanna Put My Third Eye in the Crosshair...", September 15, 2001
By
Andrew Knoll (Montclair CA, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trilogy: Conflict Climax Resolution (Audio CD)
Souls of Mischief recorded one of the greatest hip hop records of all time in 1993 and in between "'93 til Infinity" and Trilogy there is only the solid but unremarkable "No Man's Land." "Trilogy" is the SOM that we hear on "Third Eye Vision" brought together with some outstanding guest emcees and producers (Kut Masta Kurt, Mystic, George Clinton, Dilated Peoples, Alchemist, etc). From "Trilogy," the title track, to the end of the album, Souls return in full effect for the new Hiero millenium. "Soul Science" is easily one of the top ten joints of 2000 and other tracks like "Mamma Knows Best" (with Clinton and mystic" and "Bad Business" are also knockouts. Souls of Mischief has now affirmed their place in hip hop history and anyone concerned with it should get this album.

I must admit silly of me to not feel this album the first time i put it 2 my ears..but now after much scrutiny this ablum is by far one of the Phattest of 2000....the first full length track "Trilogy" is dichotomy of what this group is all about..new different and innovative 'ish..ever since the Debut "'93 til infinity' SOM and hiero has been putting it down and the continue to to it today..great production..phat beasts..and flavorful lyrics makes this one is a crowd pleaser.. THe BAy area is holding its own.. and will in the fore-see-able future.. get this one y'all
