3.0 out of 5 stars A brighter sounding Two Worlds
Heather Nova really shines on this 2 CD compilation with the peaceful Stars Come Out and the smooth pop of Made of Glass. Renegade, the first single from this compilation, really doesn't feel like Heather Nova, and the bright melody doesn't fit well with the lyrics. There are no songs that I've noticed that use the unique techno sound that you hear in The Summer from Two...

This review is from: Trilogy (Audio CD)
I downloaded this from iTunes four minutes after midnight so I could have the latest album from my favorite electronic artist and it did not leave me disappointed!

There are two discs that come with this one. The first is done in the mold of traditional ATB in terms of song structure and style. While it has ATB's distinct sound, it again goes into new directions in terms of how it is presented. Vocalists include Heather Nova, Jan Löchel, Jeppe Riddervold, and Karen Ires, with Heather and Jan being featured the most. Jan is also responsible for many of the guitars on this album, and I feel that ATB is at his best when he is working with him.

To some extent I feel the lyrics on this one are more complicated than on previous ATB albums in terms of how they are presented. This shows yet another progression of ATB, who always is seeking to try something new with every album he releases.

The second disc is a collection of soft instrumental pieces. They are heavy on ambience and also on piano. Notable is "Trilogy-The Final Chapter". Those who have heard the first two parts of the song (the first on Addicted to Music and the second on Seven Years) will appreciate this one the most. It's almost like a three piece work from the classical era and in some respects even sounds like one ala Für Elise with the simple yet powerful piano melody despite having the modern electronic backgrounds to go with it.

I feel "Trilogy-The Final Chapter" is the most powerful piece ATB has ever released, eclipsing even the first two installments of the series and "Sunset Girl", a powerful instrumental from Addicted to Music. The rest of the tracks are very relaxing and are not the typical upbeat ATB that most would expect from a typical album. Think along the lines of "Circular Symmetry" from No Silence but with much more ambience and with a focus on piano.

This is an album that I probably will be playing non-stop for some time. The date was delayed not long ago but it was well worth the wait.

American customers should note that the US release isn't coming out until May, check on Amazon for a separate listing. It's already on iTunes to coincide with this release, which is the German release.

4.0 out of 5 stars ATB - Trilogy, May 23, 2007
This review is from: Trilogy (Dig) (Audio CD)
ATB's (André Tanneberger) sixth album is "Trilogy" (2007). As a reviewer I mostly write Hip Hop reviews, as a music listener I like to listen to music of all different genres. Like a lot of people I first came across Germany's ATB when he dropped his debut album "Movin' Melodies" (1999) which included the hit single "9 PM" (Till I Come). My favourite Trance artist is Tiesto though I have only really skimmed the surface of this particular music genre. My favourite track on this release is "The Chosen Ones" a track with a excellent vibe to it, singer Jan Lochel shines on this feel good melody - great lyrics, memorable vocals, while ATB's is production subtly outstanding. I have been getting a lot of play out of track's like the exceptional "Alcarda" and somber "Trilogy" (The Final Chapter). Female singers Jennifer Karr & Karen Ises deliver on point vocals on the album's opening track's "Justify" and the single "Desperate Religion". Heather Nova, who provides a number of contributions steals the show for me though on the deep "Stars Come Out" singing with passion on a track which may produce some tears from your girlfriend. Both disc's are full of laid back track's, and while this may upset those who are looking for more fast paced hard hitting production, I find that this release is solid throughout. This is not an album for those looking for dance track's. The second disc in particular has more chill music, instrumental's which have grown on this reviewer more with additional listens. "Trilogy" is a release I would recommend for the collection.

This is another great album from ATB; the two disc set reminds me very much of Two Worlds, but better. Disc 1 - Vocal Trance (Loved it) Disc 2- Trance/Chill (Not as good as Disc 1, but still great) The album is a definite pick up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, July 7, 2007
This review is from: Trilogy (Audio CD)
I had been waiting for this album for many months... i was a lil iffy about it, i did not know wat to expect. On the one hand ATB's earlier songs had been amazing yet repetitive, once "No silence" came out it became aparent that he was begining to epirement with a new fuller sound. and while he kept his dance beat going it was noticably changing to a more ambient electronica style. this is where the wory began.

I had noticed that as ATB was changing so was Enigma (they are very good friends and influence eachothers music.) Enigma had became more "ATBish" while ATB had come to sound more like Enigma. I did not know wat to expect. But then I bought the CD and was Thrilled by it. True the beats are not as hard but in replacement of that the songs have become much fuller and still holding the same ATB feeling to them.

One interesting thing about this cd is that the first couple times u listen to it u have to listen the cds all the way through. otherwise the music isnt as good, (as each song build on the last). the first cd is more up beat while the second is more ambient sounding (in "No silence" he had four good hard beat songs and then went straight to ambient... not a good mix) while in this cd the first is dance music and the second is the ambient music.

All in all i dont know why people have been complaining about this cd... sure its differant sure its not as fast pace but by sacrificing that ATB has replaced it with a much higher quality of music... i personally cannot wait for his next album

4.0 out of 5 stars ATB - Trilogy, June 25, 2007
This review is from: Trilogy (Dig) (Audio CD)
ATB's newest CD is confusingly called "Trilogy". It's confusing since it's only 2 Discs-long, when I thought it was going to be 3 Discs-long - given the "Trilogy" title.

On top of that, it's almost like buying 2 completely different, separate artists' albums. That said, both of Trilogy's discs are good at what they set out to do.

Disc 1 is your typical ATB album. It's upbeat; it's dance-able. It's catchy, but never cheesey. There are good beats throughout and points to ATB for producing/creating them himself. A lot of DJ's can just spin good records, but ATB can also make good records. I thought the vocals were good throughout. This album is great for clubbing, driving fast, partying, etc. If you are a fan of ATB's other stuff, Disc 1 should definitely appeal to you.

Disc 2 however, is about as opposite from Disc 1 as you can get. Disc 2 is super mellow, ambient music. It is background music at its finest. It's calming, and can actually be beautiful at times - again a testament to ATB's ability to produce/create/make music. This CD is perfect for staying calm in rush-hour traffic, reading a book, or trying to fall asleep to.

So both CDs are good, even if they're really not related. I'm not sure anyone would ever naturally want to listen to them back-to-back; they're just so different from one another. If you are strictly a fan of the trance/dance genre, Disc 1 is for you, and you may hate Disc 2. If you're open to a wider taste of music, you may like both discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, May 9, 2007

I don't agree with some of the other reviews. This album shows that Andre got a talent, not only to mix songs and being a dj, but also to compose in the true sense of the word. This might not be the same as his previous albums, but what is the purpose of reinventing yourselve and to grow with your music if it's going to stay the same. That I would call boring. The 2nd cd is especially beautiful, if you are looking for something chilled with lots of piano and a dream feel to it. Standout vocal tracks on cd 1 are Renegade, Made of glass and Feel alive.

3.0 out of 5 stars A brighter sounding Two Worlds, May 27, 2007

Heather Nova really shines on this 2 CD compilation with the peaceful Stars Come Out and the smooth pop of Made of Glass. Renegade, the first single from this compilation, really doesn't feel like Heather Nova, and the bright melody doesn't fit well with the lyrics. There are no songs that I've noticed that use the unique techno sound that you hear in The Summer from Two Worlds and 9 PM from Movin' Melodies, as it would not fit in the flow of this compilation, and it's nice to hear something a bit different from that too.

Other vocals are done by Karen Ires, Jan Lochel does 3 songs, Jeppe Ridervold does 3 songs. Jan's vocal's are nothing special. Women's voices tend to work better with standard fare techno music.

The second CD is a nice ambient CD, just like the 2nd CD from Two Worlds. With the 2nd CD being all ambient non-vocals, it makes me wish the first CD had a lot more vocals than it does. It's very similar to Two Worlds in this general formatting of selection of songs, but it would've been better to have the 1st CD filled with entirely vocal songs. This 2nd CD does seem to have more [noticeable] background effects though, but they aren't too intruding to leave it as a nice calm unagitating wave.

I'm surprised this album is called Trilogy because you can only get one or two CDs, not three. Having many of the guest performers do 3 songs does help make the CD more of a trilogy, but otherwise it's really mostly a set of standard techno songs with a few good ones by Heather Nova, and Justify (vocalist not described), Desperate Religion (Vocalist karen Ires), and the non-vocal Beautiful Worlds also come out on the first CD. Nothing sticks out on the 2nd CD for me, but it's certainly not a bad CD. It's one of those CDs where I probably want to be reading a book by a pond on a sunny day or such. Also, if Two Worlds is part II of some series in which Trilogy is Part III, it's not obvious which CD is meant to be "part I."

ATB and Heather Nova obviously have a good relationship considering that she did 2 songs on Two Worlds as well. So, we can definitely anticipate wonderful things to happen with these two. Now if only Mensano could release his album with Heather Nova on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different but overall pretty good..., May 23, 2007
This review is from: Trilogy (Dig) (Audio CD)
I probably should have looked for this CD in the POP/Rock section of the store, not the Dance. ;) But there are a few tracks have the ATB Style there...

I am a big ATB fan, have most of his past albums. This was just released today in the US and I had to pick it up. After listening to most of the first CD, I wasnt dissapointed! It had the ATB feel to it, with a little more pop & rock mixed in. Don't listen to the 2nd CD while driving, you may fall asleep. I liked a few tracks, but its cool for just chillin.

I would love to see a remix of some of the 1st CD's tracks... I think we'll see that soon..

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album...but does not reach "No silence" yet..., June 26, 2007
This review is from: Trilogy (Dig) (Audio CD)
ATB is an excellent DJ. Although he's classified in the Trance category, a more appropriate definition of his style would be melodic trance, as pointed out by a reviewer here. If you look for DJ tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, PVD like trance, go elsewhere. This is more mellow, more subtle trance here. The first CD has great vocal trance tracks (Renegade with Heather Nova will probably be among the most popular), pretty energetics sometimes, but nothing like the heavy basses rhythms of the DJs I mentionned earlier. Very laid back and relaxing.
The second CD, is definitely leaning towards dream music. very relaxing, excellent chillout tracks, perfect for a lazzy afternoon, or a quiet drive from the club at 4am.
4 stars only? well, rating is different for everybody, but to me, ATB really stood out with his previous album "No silence" and tracks like Ectasy, Marrakech, and others. IMHO this album is not as innovative and sort of surf on the same wave but no higher.
dont get me wrong though, it's still great music. I guess I'm just not as nicely surprised as with the "No silence" album. if you liked it, buy this one with your eyes closed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Different, But I Feel This CD Has More Depth, June 13, 2007
This review is from: Trilogy (Dig) (Audio CD)
ATB's latest album Trilogy is better than I could have ever imagined. I've been a fan of ATB since I first heard The Fields of Love many years ago. I have seen ATB live in the US on two occasions and own all of his cds.

The first cd reminds me of Seven Years (ATB's compilation album of his best songs) - that's how good the songs are, full of depth and as though they could all be a hit. ATB has evolved, so if you were hoping for that infamous guitar riff, it's not in this cd. The beats and the lyrics, however, are catchier than ever.

I disagree with a previous user's comment that Jan Lochel's vocals are rocky as it's tough to find a good male singer in a trance song. I think that Jan Lochel does a fantastic job and when you look at the variety of singers like Heather Nova and Karen Ires, the album pulls together well. It's good to have both male and female singers in trance/pop songs. While I miss Roberta Carter Harrison's voice, each different singer does a good job to complete their song. I highly recommend this album.
