This book is great for a DIY'er that wants to add or change trim in their home. Some may say that this book is too basic however, even if you have the skills required to install trim, there are many pointers and other advice that Mr. Katz discusses that could benefit someone that has installed trim many times. The pictures are very good, and the book is written in a manner that a novice can understand.

This book would be good for someone installing trim for the first time. It is very basic. The best part of the book and DVD are the tips that Mr. Katz shares on measurement and cutting. I suppose this book is a place to start, but I was disappointed that it didn't show more.

This is a great first book if you are doing a remodel in which you will be redoing the inside of your house. Its so simple and provide great advice, with recommendations for homemade jigs and fixtures that will provide you with the best results while saving you money and aggrevation. I am doing a remodel and purchased many store products before buying this book and now I am discarding the store products for the jigs and fixtures from this book. I can't say enough about this book. If you are already experienced then I would recommend bypassing this book and looking for the authors other books that are more advanced. The author is absolutely great.

I had some items of trimwork I needed to do - adding trim around an archway, a window and replacing skirting in a room. Nothing fancy as the rooms were square and the trim simple in shape. This book was ideal for a beginner like me as it told me the order in which to do things, how to prepare the surfaces and then cut + fit the trim. I've knocked off a star as not everyone can afford a dropsaw and a Fein cutter - I wish there was more detail on using the handsaw to cut trim moldings.
For someone who is an average home handyman with an ordinary modern brick-type house with simple trim, this book will give you the confidence and I believe is all you need for 95% of trim renovations in such houses. Renovators with old wooden houses or houses with elaborate trim shipes and many-cornered rooms probably need a more specialist book on how to do trimwork.

This book is pretty good for people that are beginning. I've checked out Gary Katz's DVD series, and I would recommend purchasing "Mastering the Miter Saw" over this book. The DVD's cost more, but I think they do a far better job explaining things and giving hints on trimming. I'd recommend the checking out the DVD instead at your local library, then buy this book as a refresher. |
