Trimble HD150 Handheld Distance Laser Meter

Just got this meter for doing estimates for a remodel inside of a barn house. I needed to measure from the ground floor to the ceiling and also across the wide expanse of the partial 2nd floor. Tried a tape first but couldn't get to some areas where I would have needed to set up an extension ladder to get accurate measurements. This tool made it so simple and it was dead-on accurate. Saved me a lot of time, too. I'll still pull out my tape measures for smaller jobs, but I'll definitely use the HD150 for the ones that normally require another man or a ladder.

This is a wonderful device, when it actually works. Both the original and replacement unit we ordered had power issues. The unit would take between one and 12 or so measurements without problem, but then just shut off. The battery meter always showed full, and we used several brands of batteries, including the lithiums, always brand new, with no change in behavior. When the unit would shut down, all the internal memory would be cleared, so you'd have to go back and re-measure everything you hadn't written down. Support from Trimble is completely non-existent for these units -- no response to emails nor phone calls. Amazon replacement policy is very generous, and continue to buy from them. We plan to replace this with a Leica Disto.

I am well pleased with the performance of this product when it was working. I had a Hilti in the past and was pleased with it. It was stolen so I opted to replace it with the Trimble HD150. It did everything I expected it to do. With the Hilti I had to limit my outdoor measuring to very early in the morning or late in the afternoon due to natural lighiting. The HD150 did a much better job with higher lighting conditions.
Unfortunatly, about three weeks after my first use, the HD150 stopped working and when i called the 800 number i was refered to an exchange program site in Indianapolis. When i showed up on two separate occasions, there was no one to be found.
I am still without a replacement and am growing more frustrated by the day.

As a real estate person, I always need to measure rooms and hallways. The HD 150 is fast, easy to use and has many great features. Very happy with the performance, worth every penny.

If you have to measure rooms for work this is the tool you need. You don't need two to three people to measure the room like with an old tape measure. I had to measure a hotel room that would have taken 20-30 minutes the old way and it measurements would have been off by anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2", it was done in 5 to 10 minutes with this measuring tool.

The only bad part is if you need to measure under 1 foot it will not work and will need an old tape measure. But measuring big rooms like ballrooms you can do it with two quick pushes of the button and don't need to measure twice with tape measures that only are 25' long.

If you use a tape measure now you will be amazed by this product, it will pay for itself in a couple of trips or one big one.

This is a great way to measure long distances. Well, inside anyway. I measure the inside of churches: length, width, height, and a few others. Using this is so fast, simple, and accurate. Of course, there really isn't any other way to get the height inside a santuary.

The right angle method is nice when you need it. However, don't depend on it for highly accurate measurements. You really have to keep all those right angles at a true 90 degrees. If you don't the number is way off. Luckily it is way off or you might believe it.

All other measurements are right on though.

I'm just a home handyman and this is truly a professional device. I thought I would try it out and probably send it back because it is expensive and my occasional use wouldn't justify it. Unfortunately I found it so much fun to use that I'm not sending it back! It is built very well, operates flawlessly, measures long distances, is very accurate, and measurements are near instantaneous. It has a memory for the last set of readings so you don't even need a pad. The max/min mode allows you to measure things you can't aim at precisely (like to a corner or a pole) by sweeping across it. It calculates area and volume automatically if you wish. Everything is so easy to use you'll have the basics down in 5 minutes and the rest in 15 minutes. The drawbacks are that you must have something to point the laser beam at in order for it to measure. Also in bright sunlight it is harder to see the laser beam over a long distance. Perhaps a lesser model would be adequate for me but this one works extremely well!
