I purchased this trimmer after returning a Black and Decker that turned out to be defective. After being totally disgusted with the lack of quality in trimmers under $100, I started looking around to see what else was out there. I have a Ryobi click-link gas powered string trimmer and so this unit fits right on it. I decided to go for it. This unit is all metal (as in NO PLASTIC anywhere!) and has nice carbon steel blades. It easily cuts through 1/2 inch branches and will gnaw its way through 3/4 inch branches with minimum fuss. You can't stop it. I just trimmed 3 of my 12 foot tall Japanese maple trees and it never stalled once. I have it attached to a 31cc power head. The extra reach and swivel capability means I can easily reach the top of my trees from my ladder. The trimming job on those trees used to take hours with a long handled pruner. Now I can get it done in minutes. This tool is actually comparable to the Stihl hedge trimmer that sells for a lot more money. If you have a power head to put this tool to use, you can't go wrong. Other hedge trimmers in this price range aren't near the quality of this thing, and you don't need a cord to run it. If there is anything on the down side here, it would be the weight. It's a bit heavy to manuever for me so it would be very difficult for my wife to manage. This is no little ladies tool though so keep that in mind guys.

Works great. I like the articulating head. I like the fact that there is no plastic on this hedge trimmer. Troy-Bilt has quality products. The only thing is this hedge trimmer attachment gets really hot after just a short time. This may be normal. It trims my shrubs with no problem. I would recommend this trimmer.

I have used this headge trimmer a few times and have nothing but praise for it. The trimmer bar is 16" long which means if you have a thick hedge, you may have to make 2 passes at it. But, for doing shrubbery and bushes, it works beautifully.
The cut is smooth and even. The unit is fairly light in weight and so the fatigue factor from use is delayed significantly.
It runs smoothly without vibration and is very easy on fuel usage.
I highly recommend this hedge trimmer attachment. I don't know if it can work with other brand power sources, but with Troy-Bilt it's great.
In fact, over the past 30 years or so, I've purchased many Troy-Bilt items and have never ever been disappointed. Troy-Bilt makes a quality product.

I recently purchased this hedge trimmer because I liked the idea of just purchasing an attachment instead of a stand alone hedge trimmer. The first time that I used it, it worked ok for about 10 minutes and then I noticed that it seemed to be losing its cutting power. On its second use, it would barely cut anything. The blades seem to be working but they feel like they slip when cutting (or trying to cut). I have now resorted to trimming new growth on my hedges with the weed eater attachment. I have been very pleased with the other attachments for this unit but would advise anyone looking for a hedge trimmer to save their money and purchase something else.

Works very well. If I could improve it, I'd create a swivel that attaches directly to the power unit so that I could add an extension after the swivel and provide a longer reach for deep and high shrubs.

I have a long (500+ ft) bush and shrub lined country driveway. Nothing fancy, but it does need a good trimming one to two times per summer to keep it in check. Way too long for an electric prunner unless I also drag out my generator to power it.

When I bought my new MTD string trimmer a few years back, it had a detachable shaft that allowed the use of a series of accessories, and over time I bought a few (this trimmer, and the pole chain saw). I love them both. They are heavy, and will run you down over an hour or two of use, but why buy a dedicated gas powered trimmer when you can use one engine to drive multiple items that you rarely use?

Interestingly, Consumer Reports tried the one head / multiple accessories system in '07 (?) and didn't think it was well balanced or long enough. If I made a living using these tools, I'd agree. But for twice a year use? It's the best solution.

UPDATE: It broke this past (2010) summer. The eccentric drive that creates the reciprocating motion snapped within the silver head. I found replacement parts on line (for something like 65% the cost of new), but then received a backorder / no longer available notice. Gone / done / dead. Too bad. Nice concept, poor quality.

I have several other attachments, and a commercial Husqvarna. I have attached the trimmer unit to my Ryobi. Cuts great, but it is very heavy.
Appears very durable, the price for this durability is that I can only work so long using it becuase it wears me out. If I had to do it over again, I would buy a light weight unit and replace it if it broke. Cheaper than replacing my back.

I am using my trimmer to control ground cover. It does a wonderful job.

This product has more than met my expectations to date. It saved me so much time as compared to previous years when I use a manual trimmer. The reach of the trimmer makes it much easier to shape the tops of the shrubs however, having said that, the extra length does make it a little difficult to work in tight spaces. The trimmer attachment combined with the Troy-Bilt motor head and shaft does become a little heavy but I was able to overcome that by modifying my routine. Before receiving the trimmer I was concerned when I read a previously posted review that told of a problem with the square drive becomming stripped. Having read the comment prior to using the trimmer, I am very cautious to be sure that I am not forcing the connection.

I like this trimmer accessory, and it saves me from having to maintain a separate hedge trimmer. It works well, is easy to attach & remove, and stores nicely on my shed wall. The only drawback is that when compared to a standalone trimmer, the long extension of the gas-powered trimmer it attaches to makes it awkward to use in tight spaces. It works just fine, but it's about 3 feet of "extra handle" that you need to take into consideration. I'm still glad I bought it, but this took a little getting used to.
