Whilst it is renowned internationally for the early gospel manuscripts the Book of Kells and the Book of Darrow, the Library of Trinity College Dublin is also the repository for a larger collection of other medieval manuscripts, the bulk of which came from the library of Archbishop James Ussher, the foremost scholar of 17th-century Ireland. Professor Colker's Catalogue should replace, for the Latin manuscripts, the summary Catalogue of the whole collection, edited by T.K. Abbott in 1900. Abbott normally communicated little more than the catalogue number, size, material, date and main contents of a volume, an approach which for modern purposes is inadequate. Abbott was frequently inaccurate in matters of dating and contents, and Professor Colker has identified many texts not noticed by him as well as annotated errors.
