3.0 out of 5 stars Stereolab side project, for completists only, January 9, 2007

This is the initial release from bassist Simon Johns' side project. As with Laeticia's debut with Monade, "Socialisme ou le Barbarie" This is a new band finding its way, with mixed results. Both released far better sophomore efforts, which I recommend checking out first: Respectively, "Burn It Down, Blow It Up, Kick It Til It Bleeds" and "A Few Steps More". Completists who adore those may want to seek these debut efforts out. Be aware that half the material is instrumental, and doesn't quite feel fully realized, as if they cobbled together a few promising jam sessions.

4.0 out of 5 stars rockin' and rollin', April 9, 2005

Mellow and Jazzy.

Tracks 4,8 and 9 stand out.

Picked this album up after a stereolab concert,

this album is a solo project from the lead singer of stereolab.

They are excellent live (they had about 10 people wedged on the stage jamming)

What a diamond in the rough!

Have you ever been playing poker with your friends, and you think to yourself, "This night sucks because my friends listen to nothing but Pink Floyd"?

Have you ever been to a party, started walking around, and thought, "Good God, Ludacris again?!"?

I have. I've found that it's rough out there, trying to find music that can be listened to and enjoyed from every perspective, at any time, at any place. It's also rare to find an album consisting of mostly instrumental pieces to keep your attention for than a couple songs. And third, instrumental and all that jazz-fusion jumbo wumbo is just SO pretentious! Well, not this one, ladies and gentlemen.

This CD pulsates throughout your body. "Gin Lane" has the most perfect lazy afternoon sound, and contains the most beautiful pause in the song, in which the moog and the guitar marry a sound as unique as YOU...who are reading this right now. "Strange Science" has the most addicting repetive moog beat throughout the song. The countless instruments involved with this album could potentially ruin great songs...but they come nowhere close to sabatoging the sound. The sound is perfect.

Listen up, every song is personal. It gets you. It moves you. If you're reading this, than you've probably stumbled upon this in a Listmania, or your record-store friend with the weird taste in music told you about them. However it happened, it's not an accident. You will love it! Scouts honor.
