Original Approach to Understanding the Trinity,
By
This review is from: The Trinity and the Paschal Mystery (New Theology Studies) (Paperback)
Anne Hunt's first book is a significant theological achievement. It surveys and assesses a little appreciated but very significant development in recent Catholic theology: understanding that the death and resurrection of Jesus is not just redemptive, but revelatory of God's being. This represents a major change from the Augustinian-Thomistic understanding of the Trinity, which made no direct reference to these central moments in the Christian story: the events of Easter. Hunt's study includes detailed examinations of the trinitarian theologies of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Sebastian Moore OSB, François X. Durrwell CSsR, and Ghislain Lafont OSB, before considering the significance of their challenges to the classical understanding of the Trinity, both for theology and theological method. Her book is a welcome complement to those of other recent writers on trinitarian theology, such as Catherine LaCugna, who neglect the Trinity-paschal mystery connection. The author, who holds a doctorate in theology, is principal of Loreto Mandeville Hall, a Catholic school for girls in Melbourne. Her book is published as the fifth volume in Michael Glazier's `New Theology Studies' series, which aims at scholarly yet readable books treating key aspects of dogmatic theology.
