Editorial Reviews

Review

This is another wonderful CD of music by Robert Moran on Innova and features the world premiere recording of 'Trinity Requiem', a work commemorating the 10th anniversary of September 11. An ethereal work of incredible beauty is produced by the combination of youth choir, organ, harp and cellos. The other selections are no less effective. It is great to have the Musica Sacra recording of Seven Sounds Unseen available once again. Robert Moran is one of the world's great living composers of choral music. This CD, with its beautiful performances of exquisite music, is a must have for all music lovers. --Marvin Rosen, Classical Discoveries

Trinity Wall Street, the 'Ground Zero Church' in New York City, commissioned a work from Robert Moran to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of September 11, 2001. The result, Trinity Requiem, is one of the most moving musical settings I've heard associated with 9/11.

Set for children's choir, harp, cellos, and organ, it utilizes an elegantly simple, yet abundantly appealing musical language, combining soaring vocal lines, sumptuous pan-tonal harmonies, and flowing ostinati accompaniments to create a comforting, contemplative mass setting entirely appropriate to this occasion. The forces assembled by Trinity Church are uniformly excellent: recording a subdued, poignant performance of considerable musicality.

Respectful of those still in mourning, yet preferring an affirmative demeanor to doleful lament, Trinity Requiem is a beautiful piece that one hopes will remain in the repertoire. It transcends the nature of many occasional pieces to speak with an eloquence and sensitivity that is truly special. --Sequenza21.com, Christian Carey, September 2011

[Moran] ... has a gift for understated lyricism, which he puts to excellent use in the Requiem ... [H]e creates a work of real power and depth, as well as some magically delicate sonorities. It's a radiant, altogether lovely work ... The extended middle section of Seven Sounds Unseen (which uses a text by John Cage) is especially gorgeous, a luminous harmonic cloud that's harmonically static but that's animated by the leisurely drift of constantly morphing textures and vocal lines. The album should be of special interest to fans of lyrical new choral music. --All Music Guide, Stephen Eddins

Product Description

Moran was commissioned by Trinity Wall Street (the 'Ground Zero' church) to write a Requiem for their youth chorus to commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001. The result is a heartfelt and heavenly work for angelic voices with organ, harps and cellos. Its simplicity and direct appeal rival that of Faure himself and it is sure to become a standard repertory work. While many of the singers were barely born at the time of the attacks in New York, the composer found inspiration in the all-too common grief found in war zones around the world (such as Kosovo and London) when children suddenly lose their families to violence.
Listeners will note the synchronicity recorded on tape during the Offertory; a siren passed by during the best vocal take and could not be edited out. It becomes a touching reminder of the context of this work and the personal authenticity of these fine musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music not just of a time, but for all time December 12, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Sometimes occasional pieces are just that - music written for a specific event, but have no life beyond it. (Richard Wagner's "American Centennial March," for example) But then there are other works that speak to audiences not just gathered for the event, but those in other places and other times.

Robert Moran's Trinity Requiem is just such a work. This quiet, ethereal piece was composed for the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Commissioned by Trinity Wall Street, which stood in the shadow of the World Trade Center, the composition is a serene, almost disembodied contemplation on the words of the requiem mass. It bears some semblance to Arvo Part's suspension-of-time music, but with a more identifiable tonal center.

The quotation of Pachelbel's Canon in the middle is a risky move - in the wrong hands it could sound trite - but Moran pulls it off. Somehow it adds to the otherworldly sorrow expresses by the music.

While written for a specific event, the Trinity Requiem transcends its origins. This is music that should be heard whenever people need solace from tragedy. The Trinity Youth Chorus, supported by adult members of the Trinity Choir sing with sure technique and firm conviction that help gives the requiem its emotional power.

Also included on the album are three shorter works in a similar style by Moran. "Seven Sounds Unseen" is an earlier a cappella work that uses the same vocal techniques as the requiem. Selections from it are performed by Musica Sacra, led by Richard Weterburg. "Notturno in Weiss," performed by The Esoterica, directed by Eric Banke, adds a harp to the vocal mix, creating an interesting texture to this choral composition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Fitting November 6, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
While my tastes run much more traditional, I still very much enjoyed this contemporary piece. The solo cello in the 4th "movement" is a real gem! It's followed by pure serendipity--the unplanned wail of a police siren. This requiem is one of those almost unknown pieces that have true power to them, and are very moving.
