The Evans Magic, Mixed and Stirred to Perfection,
By Ron M. "Ron M." (Rutherford, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trio 64 (Reis) (Audio CD)
I don't know what album the reviewer who preceded me was listening to, but this is extraordinary trio work. With Peacock's only recorded appearance with the Bill Evans Trio. There is a wonderful, churning quality to Peacock's support here, and Motian is brilliant. Evans' nuanced touch is everywhere in evidence. Delicate. Fragile. Beautiful. But there are also tracks that swing. Lots of gentle, lilting beauty here. A must.

A gem,

The music created by the trio on this record has a wonderful lilt and lift to it. The opening track, the bouncy "Little Lulu", exemplifies this spirit. The whole album has a loose, "off-the-cuff" feel to it. Even Paul Motian's drumming has a little "kick" to it. Gary Peacock's playing is quite active all over the fingerboard, and certainly evokes the spirit of the dearly departed Scotty Lafaro. It works almost as effectively as the exciting interplay Bill had with LaFaro. Too bad this particular trio only recorded one album. Don't miss out on this overlooked gem.

The highlight of this CD is "Little Lulu". Original edition contained only one take of it, but the reissue added several alternative takes.

Bill Evans / Trio 64:
Piano jazz is rarely as enjoyable and as accessible as it is on this album. This is a Five Star album.

This is the first Bill Evans Trio cd I bought-and since then I've listened to more
Bill Evans than anyone else;sometimes for a change of scenery,I'll listen to someone else.Actually, this is probably closer to a 5,but I prefer the albums Evans did with say..Scott Lafaro on bass(no,Gary Peacock ain't chopped liver).I'm always impressed by the tunes Evans picks(for example,'Santa Claus is Coming to Town'?);I think...it was on the 'Piano Jazz cd with Marian McPartland that Evans claimed he had like..four rehearsals with his trios over 20 years. In this cd-and in general-it was a practice that brought out the best in Evans and his trios.

Less Is More,

I can't say enough good about this album.
It is clearly a very special piece of art. The swinging here is unparalelled, even now. I think Paul Motian is the gem on this album. His playing around the time is in full swing (pun intended). This style of playing is what he is known for, and its really no better represented anywhere else. You can hear the early stages of the path he will eventually follow to his current crop of output. Evans is brilliantly playing all over the time and with such an amazing touch. Peacock provides such amazing grace with the time; not too much, not too little, not too out, but not straight ahead. I think that sums up this album. Both '65 and '64 are unbelievable, its just that '65 tries too hard to be a great album and '64 just "is."

Best modern jazz trio.,

Three time Grammy winner. The most important post Be Bop pianist's trio. The first track "Little Lu Lu" is a title tune of a Disney cartoon. Elegant "A Sleeping Bee" and rare "Santa Clause Is Coming To Town". Many great songs. The recording from the best time of Bill Evans Trio.

65 is more than 64,

Obviously every album Bill Evans released deserves to be listened and treasured. This one makes non exception. My simply aritmetical title wants to point out that Trio 65 is a better album than Trio 64. That's why I gave "only" four stars to this Bill's effort. I gave five to Trio 65 which to me is absolutly stellar, this one to me, is a little step lower (in their titles their destiny, 65, five stars, 64, four stars...). =)))They're very close anyway. But 65 is clearly better for me. It is clearly perceivable. I don't know if it depends more on the program or the line up. Gary Peacock is not my favourite double bass player. Of course I prefer La Faro, but I prefer Chuck Israel too. Motian is great but Larry Bunker is too on Trio 65. So probably it depends more on the program. Even if I love this program too, but in 65 I can't find a single moment that is not absolutly ahead and brilliant. There are unbelievable tunes in 65, Israel, Elsa, the Round Midnight version .. I don't know. 65 is pure magic, in 64 I find some "normal" moments here and there. The very best tunes here are the bouncing Little Lulu, A sleepin bee and Always. A very good thing is that here you have a lot of alternate takes which are always nice gifts. In 64 he's always Bill of course, so it is always a great pleasure, but 65 is magic. This is "simply" a very good album from one of the greatest and most unique piano players Jazz has ever produced. The norm for him.

THIS IS A WONDERFUL JAZZ ALBUM, NOT OVERBEARING OR TOO AVANT GARDE, JUST GOOD, MELODIC MUSIC. ONCE YOU HEAR BILL'S VERSION OF SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN, YOU WILL WANT TO HEAR IT EVERY YEAR AROUND CHRISTMAS TIME. EXCELLENT ACCOMPANIMENT BY GARY PEACOCK ON BASS AND PAUL MOTIAN ON DRUMS.
