~ Not exactly sure why Amazon has two listings for this CD with slightly different titles. However, I re-posted my review here just in case someone stumbles across this listing first. For a list of the songs on this CD, see Trio 83.
~ Warren Bernhardt is a fine soloist in the Bill Evans tradition, but with his own musical identity. Bernhardt has appeared in many different settings through the years. He studied classical piano, played in Chicago while attending college, and was with Paul Winter's sextet during 1961-1964. After moving to New York, Bernhardt was with Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry, George Benson, and Jeremy Steig, in addition to doubling as a studio musician on many pop dates. He was with Jack DeJohnette's Directions (1976) and Steps Ahead (1984-1985), and has frequently led his own trios. Bernhardt has recorded several fine dates for DMP over the period of 1983 to 2003. "Warren Bernhard Trio" from 1983 is the perhaps his best DMP outing. NOTE: There is some confusion on Amazon. This CD is listed twice: once as "Trio 83" released in 1990 and once as "Trio `83" released in 1983. They are the same CD with the same nine tracks.
~ Listening to this CD, I could not help but compare it to the CD Liquid Silver by Andy LaVerne - another Bill Evans disciple. The two CDs were recorded for the same label with the same bass player (Eddie Gomez) and drummer (Peter Erskine) . While LaVerne adds guitarist John Abercrombie to four of the tracks and a string quartet to two of the tracks, Bernhardt stays in the traditional p-b-d trio format that Bill Evans mastered so perfectly.

I stumbled on this CD in a remainder/used CD store. I could listen to a bit of it with ear phones and decided that I'd take it home. Didn't know Warren Bernhardt at all but such a treasure this album is. The opening track "Fun Ride" captured me right away with the exchange of rhythms. And then there is the absolutely beautiful "A Remark You Made". The only track that took a while to appreciate was "Four Part Improvisation" but all of the others are on my frequently play list.
One of my top jazz albums.
