4.0 out of 5 stars Trio, August 9, 2009

This review is from: Trio (Audio CD)
Compared to the two CD's that Brad Shepik recorded after this one, 'Short Trip' is a rather "naked" recording: just drums, bass and guitar. No Hammond B3 organ, nor trumpet added, even no electric saz (Turkish instrument). Yet we have three soloists; Shepik leaves plenty of room for drummer Tom Rainey and bass player Scott Colley to excel on their instrument.

All songs are original (written by Shepik) except for the last track which is a Sundanes (Indonesia) traditional.

Even though Rainey is a creative drummer I wonder how this CD would have sound like if Bill Stewart was on the drums...

5.0 out of 5 stars great guitar, February 2, 2006
This review is from: Trio (Audio CD)
There are not a lot of guitar-bass-drums trios in the world. There are definitely not a lot of good guitar trios. Checkin' my collection I only came across Brad Shepiks `Short Trip''and `Drip', Pat Metheny his `Question and Answer', Joe Pass his `Portraits of Duke Ellington', albums of the Jim Hall trio and there was of course the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

It appears to be a difficult thing to play guitar trio. Metheny states that you `just don't have the dynamic range that you'd would have with a tenor saxophone or the harmonic possibilities that you would have with the piano. It's hard to maintain to be interesting.'

So, there's the reason I like Shepik his work. With ease he appears as the frontman of a great trio. Rainey and Colley play beautifully and Shepik just lays carpet after carpet of intriguing sound. I never have the time to find him dull, I never hear him slipping. Master of the guitar Shepik sounds a bit near-eastern or mid-eastern to me, being in my opinion one of his major assets.

The liner notes of Dave Douglas tells us that `this is a top quality ensemble playing original music with depth and confidence'. Brad Shepiks communicates directly with a warm sound thru his own compositions. I find this album refreshing and intriguing. It's as Dave Douglas states in his last line `a classical album of new music to enjoy!

Brad's music is like softiscated ethnic food.It have strong character. But DELICIOUS.Beautiful.
This album may be 3rd album of his own.And this trio has used guitar trio format of Jazz. One of grat drumer Jim Black plays Drums.Scott Colly plas Bass. They shows thier talents in there. thus Brad has joined Pachora. This is also great. But This album'Short Trip' is different
feeling of Pachora.
Yes.you can go to Short Trip.
