~ A talented bop-based pianist Kenny Drew is usually overlooked when it comes to discussions of talented bop pianists, probably because of his permanent move to Europe in 1961. He made his recording debut in 1949 with Howard McGhee and in the 1950s was featured on sessions with Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, John Coltrane, Milt Jackson, Buddy DeFranco, Dinah Washington, Buddy Rich, Grant Green, and others. As a leader, Drew recorded sessions for Blue Note, Norgran, Pacific Jazz, Judson, and Riverside between 1953 and 1960. After moving to Europe in 1961 Drew recorded many dates for SteepleChase in the 1970s and remained active up until his death in 1993.
~ Drew was heavily influenced by Bud Powell but was able to develop his own distinct sound. While Kenny made some fine recordings for Blue Note, his best made-in-America work was done for Riverside. The Riverside collection under review here was recorded between September 1956 and October 1958.
~ The first six tunes on this collection are trio tracks featuring Drew with Philly Joe Jones (drums) and Paul Chambers (bass) [three tracks from "Kenny Drew Trio"] or Jones and bassist Wilbur Ware [three tracks from "Kenny Drew & Pal Joey"]. Kenny excels in the trio setting where he re-interprets several Rogers and Hart standards like "The Lady Is a Tramp" and "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" and then gives a beautiful reading of Monk's "Ruby My Dear". Drew demonstrates an elegant touch and individual creativity on both ballads and swingers.
